These homemade dandelion lotion bars are made with only four ingredients and are a wonderful nontoxic alternative to store bought lotions.
Homemade Dandelion Lotion Bars
These lotion bars are great to have on hand for moisturising. This same, easy to make recipe could also be used to make lip balms. Instead of using a mould, pour the liquid into tins or lip balm tubes and label. Dandelion lotion bars and lip balm also make great gifts!
Lotion bars are great for helping cases of dry, cracked skin and with the added addition of dandelion oil, which are said to help with regenerating skin cells, as well it helps alleviate the soreness as well.
Dandelion Infused Oil
To make these lotion bars, you will first need to make Dandelion Infused Oil. You can purchase this or learn how to make your own dandelion infused oil.
Simply put, you will need some dandelion flower heads, wash and dry them and then infuse them in oil for a couple of weeks.
Once you have your dandelion infused oil, you are ready to make these dandelion lotion bars.
Making Dandelion Lotion Bars
To make these bars, you will need:
- 1 part shea, cocoa or mango butter
- 1 part beeswax
- 1 part dandelion infused oil
- dandelion petals – optional
- 5 drops Lavender essential oil, optional
For this recipe, I used 3 oz or 85g (or â…” cup) of each of the butter, beeswax and dandelion infused oil.
Add the butter and beeswax to a microwavable safe jug and gently melt, using short increments, and stirring in between each increment.
Add the dandelion infused oil and mix through.
Add the essential oils, if using and mix through.
Drop a couple of dandelion petals into the bottom of each mould, if using, then pour the melted mixture into the mould cavities.
Let set for at least an hour.
Remove from mould and store in an airtight container.
Depending on your moulds, this recipe will make a few lotion bars.
To use, simple rub the bar through your hands.
The mould used for these lotion bars can be found here. The centre line of flowers in the big mould was used.
Tips
- If your lotion bars come out a little slippery, your ratios may have been a little off. Just remelt them and add a little more beeswax to the mixture.
- If they come out a little to greasy, then try increasing the amount of shea butter while decreasing the amount of dandelion oil.
- If your dandelion lotion bars come out a little sticky, remelt and add more dandelion infused oil to the mixture.
- Store these lotion bars at room temperature in a glass jar or metal tin. Though if you live in a very hot climate, you may need to put them in the fridge in the warmer months of the year.
- These lotion bars will last up to one year.
- If you are allergic to plants such as ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds and daisies, you may react to dandelions. The milky sap of dandelions may cause itchiness, irritation or reaction on the skin. There is also a rare fibre in dandelions called inulin that some people are sensitive too or may react to as well.
