DIY Magnesium Body Lotion

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my full disclosure policy.
This DIY Magnesium Body Lotion is smooth & a great way to increase your magnesium intake which may help with headaches, low energy & insomnia.

Magnesium is a crucial mineral for our bodies as it is used in many different body functions including digestion and promoting a healthy heart, but due to many people’s diet, many of us have a magnesium deficiency. To increase your intake of magnesium, your could try eating more foods that contain this mineral, take a magnesium bath or use this calming magnesium body lotion.

Magnesium Body Lotion

So, how do you know you are suffering from a deficiency of magnesium? Many people with the following symptoms will find that their magnesium levels are lower than they should be ~ low energy fatigue, weakness, headaches, restless legs, insomnia, irritability, anxiety, depression, muscle cramps, loss of appetite and nausea.  This recipe uses Magnesium oil, which is a concentrated form of magnesium chloride that is absorbed through the skin. You can make your own magnesium oil by dissolving ½ cup of magnesium chloride flakes in 3 TBSP of boiling water. You could also purchase pre-made magnesium oil as well.

This Magnesium body lotion can be made using the following ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Magnesium oil (or make your own as per instructions above)
  • ½ cup extra virgin coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup  Shea butter
  • 2 TBSP Beeswax.
  • 10 Drops of any essential oil (I like a mixture of Frankincense, Lavender and Cedarwood)

Method

  • If making your own magnesium oil – Place the magnesium flakes in a glass jug. Pour over the boiling water and mix until the flakes are all dissolved.
  • Melt shea butter and beeswax in a double boiler over low heat. Add coconut oil.
  • Bring to room temperature (or same as magnesium oil).
  • Slowly add in the magnesium oil to the melted shea butter mix, while stirring.
  • Allow the mixture to cool.
  • Once cooled and hard, whip into a lotion, slowly adding the essential oils as you go.
  • Pour into an airtight, glass jar.
  • The lotion/cream mixture should last for up to 6 months when stored in a dark space. If you live in a hot place with high humidity, you may need to keep it in the fridge.
  • Start slowly with this lotion, rubbing in a small amount and slowly working up to make sure there are no reactions.

To Use this Magnesium Lotion, you can

  • Rub it on your legs or bottom of feet for a good night sleep
  • Rub it on your body for soothing sore muscles
  • Alleviate headaches by rubbing a small amount on the side of your head.

Just a word of caution–

  • Those with an allergy to latex should not use Shea Butter, try cocoa butter or mango butter instead.
  • You may also substitute the extra virgin coconut oil with jojoba or avocado oil (not if allergic to latex though) if you desire.
  • Some people may react to magnesium, so please try the lotion on a small spot to check. I have read that it is apparently due to a deficiency in magnesium and it should go away after using
  • Epson salts are a great product, but do not dissolve as quickly as magnesium flakes. Many people have found the salts to be irritating to their skin. Epson salts are great for a foot soak or in the bath, but are not great for use in this lotion.
