Lemongrass Lotion Bars

Lemongrass Lotion Bars

These lemongrass lotion bars are a lovely way to moisturise your skin, leaving it smooth and nourished while uplifting your spirits.

Lemongrass essential oil has antibacterial which can help to heal and prevent infections, as well as anti-inflammatory properties which will help with any scrapes, bruises and small cuts that you may get throughout the day. This amazing essential oil can also deter bugs, making them great to use during the summer months.

Making Lotion Bars

To make these lotion bars, you will need:

  • 2 oz beeswax
  • 2 oz shea butter
  • 2 oz sweet almond oil
  • ¼ tsp fruit green mica powder, optional
  • 15 drops lemongrass essential oil
  • Heart and square moulds

Lemongrass Lotion Bars ingredients

To make these bars

Add the beeswax and shea butter to a microwave safe measuring jug or bowl. Something with a spout for pouring is best, and will help make the process less messy.

Gently heat for 30 second intervals, removing from the microwave and stirring between each heating session. Continue to do this until the beeswax is fully melted. It will take a few minutes.

Lemongrass Lotion Bars adding sweet almond oil

Add sweet almond oil, then heat for an additional 30 seconds.

Lemongrass Lotion Bars adding mica

Carefully add the mica powder, if using, and the essential oil, and stir well.

Lemongrass Lotion Bars pouring into moulds

Carefully pour the mixture into the moulds, and refrigerate for 1 hour to set.

Remove from moulds and store in an airtight container.

When using the mould listed, this recipe makes 18 bars.

What exactly is a lotion bar?

A lotion bar is a great alternative to a liquid water-based body lotion. They contain oil and are solid which makes them great for the whole family to use. They are also very cost effective since they melt on contact with your skin, therefore less of the bar is used.

Using Lotion Bars

When ready to use, simply rub the lotion bar on your body and allow it to absorb into your skin. I love to use it in the morning after my shower.

I made quite a few of these bars to try, some with shea butter and others using cocoa butter. It is really up to you which one you choose. I found they both work really well, but the shea butter took quicker to melt and set, but a tad longer to absorb into my skin. I like the cocoa butter ones better as I love the smell. They did take a bit longer to melt and set, but I think it was worth the wait.

Storing the Lemongrass Lotion Bars

Store in an airtight container, out of direct sunlight, in a cool room for up to one year.

These lotion bars will stay solid, though they may start to melt in hot temperatures. If you are in a warmer climate, you may need to keep the bars in the fridge.

Tips

  • If your lotion bars come out a little slippery, your ratios may have been a little off. Just remelt them and add a little more beeswax to the mixture.
  • If they come out a little to greasy, then try increasing the amount of shea butter while decreasing the amount of sweet almond oil.
  • If your lemongrass lotion bars come out a little sticky, remelt and add more sweet almond oil to the mixture.
  • Store these lotion bars at room temperature in a glass jar or metal tin. Though if you live in a very hot climate, you may need to put them in the fridge in the warmer months of the year.
  • These lotion bars will last up to one year.
  • Be careful when using essential oils. Make sure to do your research first and use with extreme care.
