Are you looking for a way to give your coffee grinds a second life? This easy to make homemade coffee face and body scrub is just one way, and it doubles as a shower exfoliate too! Dual purpose products are just the best, aren’t they?

Coffee
Are coffee beans good for the body? Yes, use on the external body is amazing. Different minerals and nutrients in the coffee beans can help stimulate and promote healthy circulation, which in turn helps reduce the appearance of cellulite, scarring and even eczema.
The oatmeal in this recipe helps with exfoliation, helping to remove things such as dead skin cells, acne and other skin blemishes.
Coffee is a product that is high in antioxidants which have been known to help promote skin and hair growth. When covered with a carrier oil during the process of making infused oil that is used in this scrub, these antioxidants transfer to the carrier oil, which can be used as a natural skin care product.
Face and Body Scrub Variations
- Instead of the oatmeal, you could try using sugar or salt to make a sugar scrub or salt scrub
- Add a few drops or a pinch of spices for added scent. Spices that could be used include cinnamon, cardamon, ground cloves, cocoa powder, sweet almond oil and Vitamin E oil.
- If you find it smells too much like coffee, add a small amount of vanilla extract to help cover the smell. By a good quality vanilla extract or make your own.
- Add a little honey to the scrub as it is naturally antibacterial and full of antioxidants.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are potent, and need to be diluted. As this scrub is being used on your skin, you will need to use essential oils that are gentle enough to be applied to your skin – and used in the correct quantities. Just be careful using some essential oils such as tea tree, around children and pregnant women, making sure to do your research before using.
Some essential oils are photosensitive, which means that you can have a reaction if you go out in the sun within a few hours of using it, so it is recommended to use products containing these types of essential oils before bed. For this reason, when using Lemon essential oil in body care products, I use this Steam-Distilled Lemon Essential Oil from Plant Therapy as it is not phototoxic, which means you don’t have to worry about phototoxicity.
Carrier Oils
When making this coffee oil, you can use your choice of carrier oil. For this batch of oil, I used avocado oil, though any carrier oils will work. Why not try:
- Argan Oil
- Fractionated coconut oil
- Hemp seed oil
- Sunflower oil
- Olive oil
- Sweet Almond Oil
- Grapeseed Oil

Tips
- If using this scrub on your face, make sure to apply gently to the face, rubbing in a circular motion. Do not rub too hard. Do not leave it on your face for too long either. Rinse immediately.
- When using in the shower, be careful of the carrier oil. This oil can be slippery, if too much of the body scrub has been used. Start with a small amount of scrub, only taking more if needed.
- Wipe down and clean the shower floor after using to avoid slipping and falling over.
Before Using this Scrub
Before using this scrub, you will need to understand a few things.
- Test on small area of skin before using, especially if you are not someone who makes or drinks coffee on a regular basis. If there’s any irritation, discontinue use immediately.
- Wash hands well after using.
- DO NOT use homemade recipes if you are not comfortable with them. Safety is your choice and your responsibility!
