Homemade Playdough with Crayons
This fun playdough recipe is a great activity for children. It is a great way to use up old and broken crayons and children can even keep with creating their own colours if they wish!
This recipe is for one, colour batch of playdough. If you want four different colours of playdough, you will need to create this recipe four times, using different coloured crayons for each bath, eg. batch one blue, batch two purple etc.
To create this playdough, you will need:
- 1 TBSP cream of tartar
- 1 ½ cups plain flour
- ¾ cup salt
- 1 TBSP oil (vegetable)
- 2 crayons, roughly chopped
- 1 cup water
To make this crayon playdough,
First, combine the dry ingredients – flour, cream of tartar and salt – in a bowl.
Remove the labels, if any, from the crayons. Add the oil and crayons to a medium pot and cook over medium heat until the crayons are melted.
Add the water to the pot, stirring. The wax may separate, but continue to stir.
Slowly add the dry ingredients to the pot and continue to stir.
When the liquid has absorbed and the dough comes together into a ball, transfer the dough to a cutting board lined with baking paper.
The dough will still be hot. When warm, but cool enough to handle, knead the dough until it is smooth – this should take about 2 minutes.
Repeat for each colour of playdough that you want.
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two months.
