This wonderful homemade colloidal oatmeal body butter can be used all year round to help soften, soothe and moisturise dry, itchy skin. This homemade body butter recipe is easy to make and uses all-natural ingredients, making it perfect for those wishing to avoid harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances.
Colloidal Oatmeal
Used for centuries as a natural remedy, colloidal oatmeal is made by grinding oat grain into a fine powder. It is known to have anti-inflammatory properties, as well as the ability to help soothe and comfort inflamed and dry skin, softening it and adding a layer of protection. By providing a protective barrier, colloidal oatmeal helps your skin retain its moisture, keeping it hydrated while preventing water loss.
Those with eczema, psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions can use colloidal oatmeal to help calm the skin and manage their symptoms.
Colloidal oatmeal is also able to provide gentle exfoliation, leaving the skin looking smoother and feeling radiant.
Using natural ingredients including colloidal oatmeal, this easy to make oatmeal body butter helps soothe, hydrate and brighten skin. It is also known to help with anti-aging, prevent stretch marks and promoting healing.
Oatmeal Body Butter Tips
- When making and storing body butters, you will need to remember to keep in mind how the temperature of the room may affect the butter. If it starts to melt when mixing or whipping, place it back in the fridge for a couple of minutes. In hot, humid climates, you may need to store the body butter in the fridge.
- Body butters are rich, so you may find them a bit oily. If you want less of an oily feel, you can add a small amount of arrowroot powder, about ½ tsp at a time until you find the consistency you are looking for.
- Vitamin E is optional, and is often added to body butters, salves and bars as an antioxidant to prevent rancidity, as well as for its amazing skin-healing properties.
- Due to containing oatmeal, this body butter doesn’t keep as long as other body butters. A preservative can be added if you desire.
- A herbal infused oil such as lavender infused oil can be used instead of a carrier oil.
Using Colloidal Oatmeal Body Butter
- Try using this oatmeal body butter after shaving or sun exposure to moisturise the skin.
- It is perfect for soothing dry areas such as elbows, knees, and feet.
- Pamper yourself, using this body butter as a massage cream to nourish your skin.
- Use it on your thighs or abdomen to help keep the skin elastic and help with stretch marks.
- For those with eczema or other skin conditions, try massaging a small amount onto affected areas.
- Use this oatmeal body butter to help soothe insect bites and reduce swelling and inflammation.
Carrier Oils
When making this body butter, choosing the correct carrier oil for the infused oil can improve the impact of the bars as each carrier oil has its own set of distinct properties. Blending a couple of carrier oils can also help maximise their benefits.
With this body butter recipe, there are multiple carrier oils that could be used including:
- Hemp Seed Oil is great for the face and gives these bars a little green tint
- Avocado Oil
- Sweet Almond Oil
- Argan Oil
- Rosehip Oil
- Hemp Oil
- Safflower Oil

Before Using this Body Butter
Before using this body butter, you will need to understand a few things.
- Don’t use on skin with open wounds or cuts.
- Test on small area of skin before using. If there’s any irritation, dilute with more carrier oils.
- Wash hands well after using.
Making Oatmeal Body Butter
To make around 8 ounces of body butter, you will need:
- ¼ cup of Carrier Oil such as avocado oil, coconut oil or even an herb infused oil
- ¼ cup cocoa butter
- ¼ cup shea butter
- ¼ cup coconut butter
- 2 TBSP colloidal oatmeal
- 5 drops Essential oil such as lavender essential oil
- Glass jar for storage
Combine the carrier oil, shea butter, coconut oil and cocoa butter in a microwaveable jug and heat for 30 seconds at a time in the microwave until the butters have completely melted. Stir in between each heat burst.
This process could also be done in a double boiler.
Place in the fridge for about 45 minutes, until the mixture is quite firm.
Remove from the fridge and add the essential oils, if using.
Add the colloidal oatmeal and stir through. You can use a mixer to whip it if you prefer. If you do whip it, the mixture will double in size, so allow for this when getting your glass jar ready.
Transfer the whipped body butter to the glass jar.
Keep the body butter in a cool, dry place and use as needed.
Storing Body Butter
Due to containing oatmeal, this body butter doesn’t keep as long as other body butters.
You can add a preservative if you wish. Due to living in a humid climate, I keep my body butter in the fridge for up to six months.
If it becomes rancid, throw it out and make a new batch.
