These gorgeous homemade calamine lotion soap bars can help relieve minor skin irritations that have been caused by bites from insects, sunburn, eczema, rashes, allergic reactions and poison ivy. It is also great for those with sensitive skin.
Calamine Soap Bars
Calamine lotion is made from a combination of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It is used topically to help calm the skin and as a preventative measure for acne, psoriasis, itchy skin and more. As this lotion has drying properties, it is often used to dry out rashes that have been cause by poisonous plants.
This soap is great to have on hand, especially in summer for those pesky itchy bites and in case you come across a poison ivy plant.
Calamine Lotion or Powder?
In this recipe, I used calamine lotion, though this can be replaced with powdered calamine. Replace the 2 Tablespoons of calamine lotion for 2 teaspoons of powdered calamine as adding dry ingredients can change the texture of the soap base, so you don’t want to add too much. For easy of use, I used the lotion as that is what I have on hand.
Supplies for Calamine Lotion Soap Bars
When using the flower soap mould, I was able to make five soap bars.
- 1 lb shea butter melt and pour soap base
- 2 tbsp Calamine Lotion
- 1 tsp shea butter
- 5 drops chamomile
- 1 drop lemongrass
- 1 drop tea tree
- 1 drop peppermint
- Flower soap mould
- 4 cup microwave safe measuring jug with spout
- Wooden craft stick for stirring
The Itch Away blend of essential oils from Plant Therapy could be used instead of the rest of the essential oils. The good thing about this essential oil blend is that it is great for children.
Making Soap Bars
Cut the soap base into 1 inch cubes, and add them to the measuring jug.
Add the shea butter to the measuring jug with the soap base.
Heat the soap base and shea butter in the microwave for 30 seconds, remove and stir. Heat for additional 10 second intervals, stirring well between each heating session, until fully melted.
Add the calamine lotion, and stir to combine the colour.
Once the soap base cools down a little bit, add the essential oils, and stir well.
Pour the soap base into the mould cavities, and allow to set undisturbed for 2 hours.
Remove the soap bars from the mold.
The calamine lotion will sink to the bottom, giving that lovely pink color on top!
