Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice
While you can purchase pre-made spice blends, it is very easy and more cost-effective to make your own spice blends.
Made from warm, aromatic spices that you most likely already have in your pantry, this homemade pumpkin spice substitute can be used in any recipe that lists pumpkin spice.
Using Pumpkin Spice
This pumpkin spice blend can be used 1:1 in place of pumpkin pie spice.
Pumpkin spice has so many uses including:
- Sprinkle on top of coffee
- Use in muffins, scones, cakes, and pancakes
- Sprinkle on oatmeal
- Mix a pinch through yoghurt
- Mix with a little sugar and use to make cinnamon toast
- Add a small amount to cookie dough such as sugar cookies
- Mix a small amount through icing
- Use in pumpkin pies or apple pies
- Mix through a cheesecake
- Use in pumpkin donuts
- Add to pumpkin banana bread with chocolate chips
Ingredients for making Homemade Pumpkin Spice
To make around 6 TBSP, you will need:
- 2 TBSP Ground Cinnamon
- 4 tsp Ground Ginger
- 2 tsp Ground Nutmeg
- 2 tsp Ground Allspice
- 1 tsp Ground Cloves
While these are the usual ingredients used in pumpkin spice, feel free to adjust it to suit your taste. Try adding a little cardamon, black pepper, or ever star anise. Or, leave out the spices that you don’t enjoy.

Add all of the spices into a small bowl.
Combine well until evenly blended.
Storing Pumpkin Spice
