This delicious and easy to make homemade Lemon Pepper Seasoning can be used to season fish, steak or chicken or add a tangy flavour to your favourite meals, salads and dressings.
Lemon Pepper Seasoning
This delicious seasoning is made from four ingredients – lemons, black pepper, garlic powder, which is optional and salt. Depending on the size of your lemons, you may want to add more or, if you want more of a lemon taste, you can try reducing the pepper slightly or adding more lemon zest. The best thing about making your own seasoning, is that you can alter it to suit your taste.
If you grow your own garlic, you can make your own garlic powder and use that if you wish.
Using this Seasoning
There are so many ways to use this seasoning, here are a few:
- Sprinkle on fish, chicken or shrimp before cooking
- Use to flavour popcorn
- Sprinkle on potatoes before roasting
- Add to pasta dishes
- Add to marinades
Lemon Pepper Extras
For this recipe, I have already added garlic powder, but there are other dried spices that could be added instead, if you wish. These include:
- Basil
- Italian Seasoning
- Oregano
- Onion Powder
- Thyme
- Dill
- Saffron
- Coriander
- Chilli
Storing Lemon Pepper Seasoning
Spices tend to lose their potency after about six months, so it is best to use it in that time, though it will keep for up to two years. The longer you keep it, the milder the flavour will be. One way to help lengthen its freshness is to keep it in the freezer.
- Whole spices (not ground) can stay fresh for four years.
- Ground spices can stay fresh for two to three years.
- Dried herbs can be used for one to three years.
Make the Seasoning
To make ¼ cup of lemon pepper seasoning, you will need:
- 2-3 large lemons
- 2 tsp black peppercorns
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp sea salt
Start by preheating the oven to 275˚F or 135˚C.
Line a baking sheet with baking paper.
Wash the lemons, and use a cheese grater to zest only the yellow part of the lemons. Try to leave as much of the white pith behind as possible.
Spread the lemon zest in a single layer on the baking paper.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until it is completely dried out.
Remove from the oven and allow to cool.
Grind the dried lemon zest and peppercorns using a spice grinder, coffee grinder, or mortar and pestle.
Add ground lemon zest, pepper, garlic powder, and sea salt to a bowl and stir until combined.
Store in an airtight container.
