The smell of vanilla and lime together are so refreshing, helping to eliminate stress while exfoliating your skin. Making your own vanilla lime body scrub means you don’t have to worry about all the nasties in commercial products but still having soft, smooth and hydrated skin.
Vanilla Lime Sugar Scrub
Sugar scrubs are great for exfoliation, leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth.
For this sugar scrub recipe I used sweet almond oil, though you could also use coconut oil or jojoba oil instead. The ‘clear’ oils are best as they leave the sugar nice and white, especially if you are not going to add any colour to it.
Vanilla Essential Oil
Vanilla essential oil is very different from vanilla extract that is used in baking. These two cannot be interchanged in this recipe as the results won’t be the same.
With that being said, there is no pure vanilla essential oil. You may find it is called vanilla absolute or oleoresin.
This vanilla essential oil can be used or this Vanilla one, or try using Peru Balsam Essential Oil which creates a lovely vanilla scent while providing some great benefits including helping with dry, cracked skin and minor cuts and scrapes. You can also make your own vanilla infused oil to use.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are potent, and need to be diluted. As this scrub is being used on your skin, you will need to use essential oils that are gentle enough to be applied to your skin – and used in the correct quantities. Just be careful using some essential oils such as tea tree, around children and pregnant women, making sure to do your research before using.
Some essential oils are photosensitive, which means that you can have a reaction if you go out in the sun within a few hours of using it, so it is recommended to use products containing these types of essential oils before bed. For this reason, when using Lemon essential oil in body care products, I use this Steam-Distilled Lemon Essential Oil from Plant Therapy as it is not phototoxic, which means you don’t have to worry about phototoxicity.
Some essential oils that can be used in this scrub are lime, stress away and vanilla.
To Use
Use in the shower a couple of times a week. Simply gather a small amount of the scrub in your fingertips. Rub your hands together and gently massage into your skin. Rinse off with warm water using a small wash cloth if desired. Make sure to rinse any excess away from the shower after use as well.
Tips
- If using this scrub on your face, make sure to apply gently to the face, rubbing in a circular motion. Do not rub too hard. Do not leave it on your face for too long either. Rinse immediately.
- When using in the shower, be careful of the carrier oil. This oil can be slippery, if too much of the body scrub has been used. Start with a small amount of scrub, only taking more if needed.
- Wipe down and clean the shower floor after using to avoid slipping and falling over.
