This amazing homemade hand cream is so nourishing and soothing, and is easy to make with all natural ingredients.
Homemade Hand Cream
Perfect for working hands that don’t wear gloves – like me! Infected fingers and still haven’t learnt my lesson – and dry, winter hands, this cream is soothes, hydrates and nourishes the skin on your hands. Made with natural ingredients, and completely customisable, this cream is easy to make with many ingredients you may already have on hand from making other homemade products.
For this hand cream:
- Essential oils are optional, but lavender, frankincense, and helichrysum essential oil are great options.
- Cornflour can be used instead of arrowroot powder.
- Shea butter can be used instead of cocoa butter.
- Rendered tallow can be used instead of coconut oil.
Carrier Oils
When making a cream, choosing the correct carrier oil can improve the impact of the salve as each carrier oil has its own set of distinct properties. Blending a couple of carrier oils can also help maximise their benefits.
With this cream recipe, there are multiple carrier oils that could be used including:
- Avocado Oil
- Sweet Almond Oil
- Argan Oil
- Rosehip Oil
- Hemp Oil
- Safflower Oil

Essential Oils
You can add a few drops of essential oils to this lip balm if you wish, though please remember that essential oils are potent, and need to be diluted. As this lip balm is being used on your lips, you will need to use essential oils that are gentle enough to be applied to your lips – and used in the correct quantities.
Just be careful using some essential oils such as tea tree and peppermint, around children and pregnant women, making sure to do your research before using.
I personally prefer not to use essential oils in my lip balms as they may enter your mouth and I do not recommend ingesting essential oils.
Ingredients for Making Winter Hand Cream
To make around 8 ounces of this cream, you will need:
- ½ Cup Cocoa Butter
- ½ Cup Coconut Oil
- 4 TBSP Carrier Oil
- 1 TBSP Arrowroot Powder
- 10 Drops Essential Oils – Optional
Making Hand Cream
Pour the coconut oil and cocoa butter into a glass container and heat up in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each heating session, until they have melted. A double boiler method works for this as well.
Remove from the heat and let harden in the freezer for about 30 minutes.
If using essential oils, add them to the carrier oil.
Take the mixture out of the freezer and whip until light and fluffy.
Slowly add in the carrier oil while gently whipping.
Then add in the arrowroot powder and mix through.
Pour into a glass jar and add the lid.
Using Homemade Hand Cream
To use, scoop a generous amount of cream out of the jar and apply to your body.
Storing Homemade Hand Cream
Store the jar in a cool place, as it will melt if it gets too hot. It should last around three months.
If needed, you can try to re-fluff the body cream by whipping it back up to the desired consistency.
