During the 1700s, the American colonies were growing rapidly. More land was needed for these people so they could farm and hunt. They began to move west, settling in the Northwest Territory, which is today known as Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois. Learn about the Westward Expansion with this fun and free Westward Expansion Flip Book.

Westward Expansion Research Flip Book

In 1803, the President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, bought the land of Louisiana from France for $15 million. This land ran from west of the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. This land also doubled the size of the United States.

The United States continued to grow, gaining much of the southwest after a war with Mexico and then the Oregon Territory in a treaty from Great Britain.

By 1890, the country had 44 states and the government announced that the west had been explored and the expansion had been achieved.
