DIY Natural Zit Zapper Sticks

This DIY natural zit zapper stick combines beeswax, coconut oil and essential oils that can be applied to acne prone areas or applied to individual spots that are not open. For those that live in a cold climate, you may leave the beeswax as the sticks should not melt. But, those like me that live in a hot, humid climate, the beeswax helps to keep the sticks solid.

Carrier Oils

When making a salve, zit zapper stick or lip balm, choosing the correct carrier oil can improve the impact of the balm as each carrier oil has its own set of distinct properties. Blending a couple of carrier oils can also help maximise their benefits.

With this balm recipe, the carrier oils that can be used include:

  • Avocado Oil
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Jojoba Oil – is good for those with oily skin
  • Sweet Almond Oil

You can learn more about carrier oils here.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are potent, and need to be diluted. Make sure to do your research first and use with extreme care. As this stick is being used on your skin, you will need to use essential oils that are gentle enough to be applied to your skin – and use in the correct quantities. Be careful to avoid sensitive areas like your eyes. Also, make sure to use oils that are safe for kids if using this stick on your kids.

Be careful when using some essential oils such as lemon. This is a photosensitive oil, which means that you can have a reaction if you go out in the sun within a few hours of using it. For this reason, when using Lemon essential oil in body care products, I use this Steam-Distilled Lemon Essential Oil from Plant Therapy as it is not phototoxic, which means you don’t have to worry about phototoxicity.

Eucalyptus essential oil is also an oil that needs to be used with caution. As with some oils, this one should not be used around young children, or those that are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Before Using this Stick

Before using this stick, you will need to understand a few things.

  • Test on small area of skin before using.  If there’s any irritation, dilute with more carrier oils.
  • Wash hands well after using.

To use, simply apply a small amount on a pimple when it appears.

Zit Zapper Tips and Tricks

  • This recipe can be used with a number of different carrier oils or even an infused oil.
  • Essential oils are optional.
  • A small amount of honey could be added for extra healing properties.
  • I live in a hot climate, so this is made with adding extra beeswax to stop it from melting during hot summers, thus making this a harder zit zapper stick. You may want to decrease/increase the beeswax to suit your climate. You can test the consistency of your zit zapper stick by placing a small amount of mixture into the freezer for 2 minutes. Then take it out and let it come to room temperature before testing its hardness. If it is too soft, add a little more beeswax, if too hard, add a little more oil.
  • You can substitute carnauba wax for beeswax, though it is harder than beeswax, so you will probably need to decrease the amount slightly.
  • Vitamin E is optional, and is often added to beauty products as an antioxidant to prevent rancidity, as well as for its amazing skin-healing properties.

Zit Zapper Stick Variations

Other essential oils that can be used in this recipe include:

  • Lavender Essential Oil – Which has antibacterial and antiseptic properties which will help lessen scarring.
  • Eucalyptus Essential Oil – Which has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and is highly effective at eliminating bacteria, especially the one that produces many kinds of acne.
  • Rosemary Essential Oil – Has pain relieving properties which can be caused by some acne.
  • Frankincense Essential Oil – A lovely gently healing essential oil that helps with regenerating damaged skin. It is also antibacterial which helps ward off any infection that may occur.

Other Acne Treatment Ideas

Though this spot treatment works well for most, it may not necessarily work for every single person.  Here are some other ideas that you can try, to see what works best for you.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar – Dilute a little apple cider vinegar with water and then dab onto the acne with a cotton ball. Do not use on open wounds.
  • Bicarbonate of Soda / Baking Soda – Create a paste using bicarbonate of soda and water. Spot apply or gently apply to the whole face. Leave on for a few minutes, then rinse off thoroughly. Repeat as needed.
  • Green Tea – With its powerful antioxidant properties, create a fast wash using brewed green tea. Cool before using as a face rinse when you wash your face.
  • Witch Hazel – Apply as needed with a cotton ball.
  • Charcoal – Use a charcoal soap as a face wash. It can help to cleanse the face and draw out any toxins.
  • Lemon Juice – Slice off the end of a lemon and rub the inside (not the skin) on your entire face. Leave on for a few minutes before rinsing off thoroughly. Do not use this on open wounds.

Ingredients for making Zit Zapper Sticks

To make around 3 ½ ounces, you will need:

  • ¼ Cup Coconut Oil – This oil is antifungal and antibacterial and helps to reduce redness and puffiness.
  • ½ TBSP Beeswax – Beeswax is high in Vitamin A. It helps with the healing process.
  • 10 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil – Tea Tree is highly effective at clearing breakouts and can improve acne-prone skin. The anti-inflammatory nature of Tea Tree essential oil purifies the skin; reducing acne and the appearance of blemishes. Tea Tree can improve the appearance of troubled, inflamed skin.

Depending on your location, you may prefer to keep your sticks in the fridge. This will stop them from melting or ending up too runny to use.
