Garlic and Mullein
Mullein is a plant that grows a tall flower spike. It is a medicinal plant that is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It has been used traditionally to help

When combined, mullein and garlic, have been used to treat inflammations, swellings and to clean congestion in the lymphatic system.
The olive oil that the garlic and mullein are infused in can also help to soften up the earwax, making it easier to remove from the ear.
Before Using this Ear Oil
Before using this oil, you will need to understand a few things.
- If there is a chance that the drum is perforated DO NOT USE and immediately consult your doctor.
- Test on small area of skin before using. If there’s any irritation, dilute with more carrier oils.
- Wash hands well after using.
- Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- If there is fluid oozing from the ear, other than this clear oil, discontinue use immediately and consult your doctor.
Using Garlic Mullein Ear Oil
Gently warm the oil to body temperature by placing the bottle in a glass of hot water for a few minutes.
Then, have the person lay on their side with the affected ear facing upwards. Drop 1 to 2 drops into the affected ear.
Let them rest in this position for up to 10 minutes.
Then, hold a tissue to the ear or use a cotton ball to catch any excess oil that may come from the ear as they sit up.
Repeat 2 to 3 times a day.
To test the ear oil before using, apply a small amount to your wrist. This is important for children.
For young children, try massaging a drop of oil into the outer ear canal.
Make sure to get plenty of fluids and rest while dealing with an earache. A warm compress may also help ease the pain as well.
Storing Garlic Mullein Ear Oil
Place the dropper bottle in a cool, dark place.
The oil should be at its best for around 12 months, though always check before using.
Keep out of reach of children.
Notes
- If you are picking fresh flowers to use in this era oil, make sure to harvest them from a pesticide free area. Alternatively, you can purchase flowers from a reputable company.
- Harvest only when you are 100% positive you have the correct plant as there are many lookalikes which are inedible or poisonous.
- You can use any type of carrier oil for the infused oil. This recipe uses olive oil as it helps to soften the ear wax, making it easier to remove the wax from the ear.
- There is no need to add essential oils to this oil. It is powerful enough as it is.
- With mullein having so many amazing medicinal properties, it makes a wonderful herb, especially when combined with the amazing health benefits of garlic. Though, if you don’t have any mullein, this ear oil can be made with just olive oil and garlic.
Making Ear Oil
To make this ear oil, you will need:
- 1 Cup of carrier oil – I prefer to use olive oil for this ear oil
- 6 Garlic Cloves
- 5 TBSP Dried Mullein Flowers (Verbascum Sp.)
Cut up, mince or crush the garlic cloves.
Place the garlic and the mullein into a glass jar.
Cover with olive oil. Try to have as little air in the jar as possible. So, if you are making a small amount of ear oil, use a small jar. For a larger batch, use a larger jar.
Add the lid and let sit for 6 weeks. Try to remember to shake or turn over the mixture every few days.
When ready, strain the oil using a muslin cloth doubled over or a fine strainer. Make sure that no particles of the flowers or garlic pieces are left in the oil.
Pour the strained oil into a glass, amber dropper bottle.
