Hair Detangling Spray
A detangling spray is a leave-in conditioner that makes combing your hair a lot easier while also improving the health of your hair. It can be applied to both wet and dry hair.
The hibiscus (Rosella) used in this spray is rich in vitamin C which helps to treat a dry and itchy scalp. It is also rich in amino acids that nourish and strengthen your roots while also stimulating hair growth.
This spray also uses a small amount of a natural conditioner. Look for a natural and organic conditioner like one of these from Shea Moisture, or Max Green or Acure.
You can also add essential oils to this spray if you wish.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are potent, and need to be diluted. Make sure to do your research first and use with extreme care. As this spray is being used near your body and face, you will need to use essential oils that are gentle enough to be applied to your skin – and use in the correct quantities. Be careful to avoid sensitive areas like your eyes. Also, make sure to use oils that are safe for kids if using this spray on your kids.
Be careful when using some essential oils such as lemon. This is a photosensitive oil, which means that you can have a reaction if you go out in the sun within a few hours of using it. For this reason, when using Lemon essential oil in body care products, I use this Steam-Distilled Lemon Essential Oil from Plant Therapy as it is not phototoxic, which means you don’t have to worry about phototoxicity.
Some essential oils that could be used in this spray are
- Lemon essential oil
- Patchouli and tea tree- beneficial for oily hair
- Rosemary and peppermint (Can’t be used on young children)
- Chamomile and Lavender – beneficial for dry hair
Carrier Oils
When making a salve, choosing the correct carrier oil can improve the impact of the salve as each carrier oil has its own set of distinct properties. Blending a couple of carrier oils can also help maximise their benefits.
With this salve recipe, there are multiple carrier oils that could be used including:
- Avocado Oil
- Sweet Almond Oil
- Argan Oil
- Rosehip Oil
- Hemp Oil
- Safflower Oil

Using Hair Detangling Spray
If using on wet hair, towel dry your hair first to make sure that it is not soaking wet.
To use this detangle, start at the bottom of your hair, spraying onto small sections of wet or dry hair.
Use a wide comb or brush to slowly and gently detangle your hair.
Reapply more spray as needed.
Do not rinse off.
Hibiscus Infused Oil
To make this spray, you will first need to make hibiscus infused oil.
First you will need to infuse the hibiscus in the almond oil. To do this, let your fresh flowers dry for at least a day or two before infusing.
Place the dry hibiscus flowers in a glass jar and cover it completely with almond oil.
Put the lid on the jar and store in a dark cupboard for two to four weeks, shaking every couple of days to keep everything submerged.
Strain the flowers with a strainer, cheesecloth or an unbleached coffee filter. The infused oil is now ready to make into a spray.
If you want to speed up the infusion process, slowly heat the oil in a slow cooker on low heat for 24 – 48 hours.

Hair Detangling Spray Notes
- Essential Oils are optional but can add great benefits to the spray.
- Any carrier oil works.
- 2 tsp of Vitamin E oil can be added to the spray, if desired.
- I have dark coloured hair and it works great on it. I haven’t used it on light/blonde hair. Due to using hibiscus tea, this spray may add a light red colour to light hair, though it should wash out. If you are worried, use water instead of hibiscus tea.
