What are CVCe Words?
CVCe words are words that follow the pattern of consonant-vowel-consonant-silent e. The ‘e’ is located at the end of the word and is not pronounced, though it does play a crucial role in the word. This ‘e’ typically causes the vowel in the middle of the word to make a long sound such as the long ‘a’ in cake, or the long ‘o’ in hope.
Why are CVCe Words Important?
Learning CVCe words help show children that letters translate into sounds. These sounds can then be blended into words. Once children work this out, their reading skills really start to improve greatly.
Due to the ease of decoding these short words, they become a powerful motivator for children as they become more experienced at reading.
Once they have the ability to sound out these simple words, they begin to use these skills on more complex words with more sounds.
CVCe words are the next place to go after learning CVC words to help children become fluent readers.

Using the CVCe Board Games
To play these games, each player will need their own counter or marker and a die.
Both players place a game piece next to the starting place.
The first player rolls a die and moves forward the number of spaces shown. They then read the CVCe word that is on the space that they land. They can also record the word on their record sheet, though this is optional, for extra practice.
If they land on a certain picture, they move back two spaces. If they land on another different picture, they can move their counter forward one space.
The second player then has their turn.
Continue until both players reach the finish.
