Homemade Oven Cleaner Paste

Homemade Oven Cleaner Paste

To be honest, cleaning the oven is a never-ending battle that I prefer not to have anything to do with. With the amount of use my oven gets, it is constantly covered in baked-on splatters to stubborn grease. Commercial cleaners are something I am trying to stay away from. Not only are they not good for your health, I find they can irritate the skin, give you headaches if not enough ventilation in my small kitchen.

This budget-friendly oven cleaner paste is easy to whip up on a regular basis, making cleaning the oven a much easier task to keep on top of.

Essential Oils

You can add a few drops of essential oils to this lip balm if you wish, though please remember that essential oils are potent, and need to be diluted. As this lip balm is being used on your lips, you will need to use essential oils that are gentle enough to be applied to your lips – and used in the correct quantities.

Just be careful using some essential oils such as tea tree and peppermint, around children and pregnant women, making sure to do your research before using.

I personally prefer not to use essential oils in my lip balms as they may enter your mouth and I do not recommend ingesting essential oils.

Ingredients for Making Oven Cleaner

To make around 8 ounces of cleaner paste, you will need:

  • 2 TBSP Liquid Castile Soap
  • 1 ½ Cups Bicarbonate of Soda
  • 6 TBSP Water
  • 4 TBSP Lemon Juice
  • 25 Drops Essential Oils, Optional – Citrus ones would work well

Using Homemade Oven Cleaner Paste

Remove the oven racks from inside your oven and set aside.

Make the cleaner paste and spread over all the interior surfaces of the oven and let it sit for a few minutes.  I would recommend using gloves for this. The mixture will turn a brownish colour as you rub it on.

Then, wipe clean with a damp cloth. To make sure you have removed it all, try putting a little vinegar in a spray bottle and spraying it all over the interior of the oven. The vinegar will react with the bicarbonate of soda, and gently foaming showing you know where it is.

Repeat wiping out with a damp cloth until all the bicarbonate of soda residue has been cleaned away.

Heavy, stuck on foods may need to have the paste left on them for a longer period of time to loosen them to make them easier to remove.

Place the oven racks back into the oven.
