This homemade beard balm is easily able to contain stray hairs, while soothing the skin and softening the hair. It smells amazing, contains natural ingredients and can be made for a fraction of the cost of a commercial product. It also makes a wonderful birthday, Father’s Day or Christmas gift!
Homemade Beard Balm
Beard balm is a male grooming product that is great for keeping the beard soft and shiny while taming the stray, flyaways. It also helps keep the skin below soft and help with an itchiness that may occur.
It acts like a leave in conditioner that softens, tames and protects the hair that makes up the beard. Not only making the beard softer, but also helping it to be styled as well.
The shea butter in this recipe also helps with eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis issues that may occur in this area.
The jojoba oil helps moisturise and condition the hair and skin, the beeswax gives it the hold and the essential oils are for a lovely scent.
Using Conditioning Beard Balm
The best time to use this balm is after a shower as the beard needs to be clean.
For the best results, make sure to towel dry the beard as you don’t want it dripping wet.
Scoop out a small amount of beard balm. Longer beards will need more, while short beards only need a small amount. So when starting out, use a small amount and add more if needed.
Warm the balm up in your hands by rubbing them together while the balm slowly melts.
Apply the balm starting at the skin on the sides of the face and moving onto the chin and then down the beard.
Comb, brush and style as usual.
Use on a daily basis.
If too much is accidentally used, then just wipe the excess off with a towel. Though, if this balm has been applied at night or when you are staying at home, try leaving it in to soak for a deep conditioning effect.

Beard Balm Variations and Tips
- Cocoa butter can be used in place of the shea butter or the coconut oil.
- Try argon oil instead of jojoba oil.
- Essential oils that can be used on their own or as part of a blend include: cedarwood, bergamot, lavender, rosemary, sandalwood, pine, orange, white fir, clove, spruce, balsam fir, lemon, jasmine, peppermint and Frankincense
- Essential oils are optional. If you don’t have any on hand, then you can still make the balm and use it. It may smell like shea butter as that is the strongest of the ingredients.
Storing Beard Balm
Store in a glass jar in a dry, cool place and it should keep for up to 12 months or longer.
If you live in a hot, humid climate, you may need to store this balm in the fridge to stop it from melting too much.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are potent, and need to be diluted. As this soap is being used on your body, you will need to use essential oils that are gentle enough to be applied to your skin – and use in the correct quantities. Be careful to avoid sensitive areas like your eyes.
