Eggs

Eggs are highly nutritious, gluten free and dairy free. With our own chickens, one thing we always seem to have lots of.

Packed with loads of vitamins and minerals, high in protein and sugar free, eggs are also delicious to add to a variety of dishes.  If you have a lot of eggs like us, check out these ways to use your extra eggs.

Advantages of using a Microwave

Boiling eggs in the microwave has several advantages, like when we had no oven, or stovetop, we were still able to enjoy our fresh, homegrown eggs.

Those that are travelling in a caravan or staying in hotels, you will find that many of these places have microwaves which can be used to boil eggs.

The time factor on and the lack of pots and pans needed is a great advantage when wanting some fresh, boiled eggs.

How to Boil Eggs in the Microwave

For the best results when boiling eggs in the microwave, use fresh eggs.

* Just to note, remember that microwaves can vary, so you will need to experiment with your microwave as to the times that work best for your microwave. For this, I used an 1100 watt microwave.

* The bowl will be hot, so handle with care.

Place the eggs you want to boil in a fairly deep, microwaveable bowl or jug.

How to Boil Eggs in the Microwave - adding eggs to bowl and covering with water

Add enough water to fully submerge the eggs and there is about ½ inch of water over the eggs.

Next, add the salt. Add ½ teaspoon of salt for each egg you have submerged in the bowl. DO NOT FORGET THIS STEP.

Microwave the eggs for 4 minutes.

Let the eggs sit in the bowl in the microwave for 1 minute.

Microwave the eggs again for an additional 3 to 4 minutes.

Fill another bowl with ice and water or really cold water.

How to Boil Eggs in the Microwave - removing eggs from hot water and putting in ice water

If you soft eggs with runny yolks, let the eggs sit in the water for an additional 2 to 3 minutes. When the time is up for your eggs, remove them immediately with a slotted spoon and place in the ice water for 1 minute.

If you want medium boiled eggs, allow them to sit in the water for an additional 6 to 7 minutes. When the time is up for your eggs, remove them immediately with a slotted spoon and place in the ice water for 2 to 3 minutes.

If you want hard boiled eggs, allow the eggs to sit in the water for 8 to 10 minutes. When the time is up for your eggs, remove them immediately with a slotted spoon and place in the ice water and let them sit for up to 5 minutes.

Once removed from the ice water, the eggs will be ready to use.

Will the Eggs Explode?

When boiling eggs in the microwave, make sure to add the salt. This salt prevents the eggs from exploding, and nobody wants to clean up an egg mess in the microwave!

For each egg that you add to the microwaveable container, add ½ teaspoon of salt. So, for 2 eggs, add 1 teaspoon of salt. For 4 eggs, add 2 teaspoons of salt.

Storing Boiled Eggs

The best way to store boiled eggs is in their shell in an air-tight container in the fridge. Dry the egg shells and make sure to label the container with the date they were boiled.

Hard boiled eggs should last for up to one week, while soft boiled eggs will only last for a day or two.
