Fizzy Frozen Heart Experiment

To create this fun experiment, you will need:

Jump to Instructions Print Instructions
  • ¾ cup baking soda
  • ¼ cup warm water
  • Red food colouring
  • Vinegar
  • Heart-shape silicone mould
  • Shallow bowl

Fizzy Frozen Heart ~ Chemical Reaction Experiment Ingredients

Chemical Reaction Experiment

In a large mixing cup, stir together the baking soda and water until the baking soda is dissolved. Stir in red food colouring.

Pour the mixture into the heart-shaped silicone mold and freeze overnight or until completely frozen.

Fizzy Frozen Heart ~ Chemical Reaction Experiment Freezing

You can make as many moulds as you like and any colour that you like.

Fizzy Frozen Heart ~ Chemical Reaction Experiment Three Frozen Hearts

Place the mould on a large shallow dish.

Fizzy Frozen Heart ~ Chemical Reaction Experiment Starting experiment

Carefully squeeze over vinegar a small amount at a time.

You could also pour the vinegar into the shallow bowl, then carefully lower the frozen heart into the vinegar. If doing this method, I recommend having an adult lower the heart while wearing a pair of gloves.

Keep adding vinegar and watch what happens.

Fizzy Frozen Heart ~ Chemical Reaction Experiment ~ Vinegar is working

As the vinegar reactions with the baking soda, the heart will slowly melt away.

The more vinegar you add, the more the heart dissolves.

Fizzy Frozen Heart ~ Chemical Reaction Experiment ~ Alternative Experiment Ideas:

  1. Create frozen hearts using a solution made from vinegar and water. Dip the frozen hearts into a solution of baking soda and water.
  2. Experiment with different ratios of baking soda to water when freezing the hearts to see which brings a more exciting reaction.

Chemical Reaction

When baking soda is mixed with vinegar, the mixture rapidly foams up with carbon dioxide gas. The solid, baking soda, and the liquid, vinegar, have reacted when placed together. They have formed a gas and a liquid. If you use enough vinegar, you can make all of the baking soda react and disappear.

Though the products in this experiment are household products, caution should always be taken, as you don’t want to get splashes in the eyes, or ruin your clothes. When completed, the ingredients can be disposed of by washing them down the sink with plenty of water.

By the ways, another name for baking soda is sodium bicarbonate or bicarbonate of soda, if you are not familiar with the term baking soda.
