These amazing Green Tea Soap Bars are made with a melt and pour soap base making them incredibly easy to make.
Green Tea Soap Bars
Gentle on the skin, green tea said to calm, moisturise, soften and protect the skin. As a rich source of antioxidants, it can also help reduce skin damage and aging of the skin. Green tea is safe and suitable for all skin types, making these soap bars the perfect gift for everyone, especially those suffering from skin inflammations.
Soap Bar Hints and Tips
Melt and pour soap base is a ready-base base, which means that you don’t have to mess around with lye.
This soap can be made with any soap base like shea butter, goat’s milk, glycerine or olive oil. Though, for this one, I chose the goat’s milk soap base.
For this soap, I used one tablespoon of green tea. This tea has to be added once the soap has cooled off quite a bit, otherwise the leaves will sink to the bottom and not throughout the entire bar. Using this type of tea also creates a ‘brownish’ soap.
You can replace the green tea with matcha powder as it shares all the benefits of green tea and is rich in nutrients and antioxidants. Using matcha powder would create soap bars of a lovely shade of green ore grey-green as some matcha teas are better at keeping their colour, though this does depend on the brand.
You could always add ⅛-¼ tsp of green mica for a lovely green colour.
To make the top of the soap bars free from bubbles, you can spray with rubbing alcohol straight after pouring the mixture into the moulds. This will help the bubbles disperse.
For those in Australia, I purchase my soap supplies from Aussie Soap Supplies in Western Australia.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are potent, and need to be diluted. As these soap bars are being used on your skin, you will need to use essential oils that are gentle enough to be applied to your skin – and used in the correct quantities.
This lovely smelling DIY soap bar does contain lemon essential oil. This is a photosensitive oil, which means that you can have a reaction if you go out in the sun within a few hours of using it, so it is recommended to use this scrub before bed. For this reason, when using Lemon essential oil in body care products, I use this Steam-Distilled Lemon Essential Oil from Plant Therapy as it is not phototoxic, which means you don’t have to worry about phototoxicity.
Just be careful using lemon and many other essential oils around children and pregnant women, making sure to do your research before using.
Lemon essential oil contains antioxidants, and is astringent, meaning it helps keep your skin clean, less oily and help reduce acne breakouts. It also helps fight the signs of skin aging and reducing acne which makes it a great addition to this soap.
Supplies Needed to Make Soap Bars
With only three ingredients, these soap bars are incredibly easy to make. Here is what you will need to make 4 x 1 inch soap bars:
- 1 lb melt and pour soap base
- 1 TBSP green tea, divided
- 10 drops Lemon Essential Oil
- 4 inch Silicon Soap Mould
- Wooden craft stick for stirring
- Microwaveable safe jug / cup with spout
Making Green Tea Soap Bars
Cut the soap base into 1 inch cubes and add to the microwaveable safe jug.
Heat in the microwave on high for 30 seconds.
Remove and stir well with the craft stick. Heat in 10 second intervals, stirring well between each heating session, until the soap base is fully melted.
Set aside and allow to cool down for two minutes, then stir.
Add the majority of green tea, leaving some aside for the top of the soap bars, and the essential oil (if using), and stir well slowly until you can feel it cool down and get slightly thicker.
Pour into the soap mould. Use the craft stick to continue slowly stirring the soap in the mould until it starts to harden. It will look chunky on the top. This is what gives the soap a distinct look.
Sprinkle the remaining green tea on top.
Allow the soap to fully set for at least six hours, or overnight.
