Toilet Bowl Cleaning Powder

This easy to make, all natural toilet bowl cleaning powder is a great way to keep the toilet clean and smelling nice.

Cleaning the toilet is one of the jobs that I would prefer not to do. I have been researching more natural (and easier) ways to clean the toilet. I make and use the toilet cleaning bombs which I find are great to pop in once a week to help with keeping the bowl cleaning. To do a more deeper clean, I have been using this toilet bowl cleaning powder.

While the commercial products work very well, they do contain bleach and/or hydrochloric acid which are very harmful to our respiratory system when we breathe them in and can easily aggravate asthma symptoms.

The combination of baking soda (bi-carbonate of soda) and the citric acid in this recipe produce a fizz and a bit of magic to help clean the toilet bowl. The essential oils are optional, but I love the smell they bring, as well as their antibacterial properties; depending on which oils you choose.

You will need:

  • 1 cup baking soda (bi-carb soda)
  • ⅓ cup citric acid
  • 10 drops Essential Oils

Add the baking soda (bi-carb soda) and the citric acid to an airtight, glass container. Add 20 drops of essential oils such as Citrus Blend, Purify Blend, Protective Blend, Tea Tree or a mix of Lavender and Lemon, and mix well. Add lid to jar.

To use, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the mixture into the bowl of the toilet. Scrub lightly with the toilet brush and then flush once mixture has stopped fizzing.

I have added my cleaning powder to a metal shaker like this one, though mine has larger holes and is sealed with a clean plastic lid. This makes it easy to just shake some into the toilet bowl.
