The Man from Snowy River

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my full disclosure policy.

The theme for the Poppins Book Nook this month was Poetry.

As we are Australian, I decided to chose a famous Australian writer, A.B “Banjo” Paterson who wrote many ballads as well as a couple of books during his life.

Man from Snowy River 1

One of Andrew Barton Paterson’s most famous ballads is The Man from Snowy River. We found many versions of this ballad at the library, as well as a cd where we could listen to the ballad being narrated and then we watched the movie by the same name.  There is also a tv series that we didn’t watch.

If you have not read this ballad, you can find it here: A Man from Snowy River.

Man from Snowy River 2

The Man from Snowy River is a ballad that was first published in The Bulletin, an Australian new magazine on the 26th April 1890.  A ballad is a poem that tells a story and can often be turned into a song.

This poem tells about a pursuit on horseback to recapture a valuable horse that has escaped. It had run off and was now living with the wild horses (brumbies) on the mountain ranges. The chase continues until the brumbies descend an extremely steep slope. All the riders give up the pursuit due to the danger of riding down this slope, except for the young hero.

Commemorating A.B. Paterson and this famous poem, you can find them both on the current Australian $10 note.

That is really interesting- I had heard of Banjo Paterson but didn’t know the full extent of the ballad. I remember my grandparents watching The Man from Snowy River!

My kids would really enjoy the Man from Snowy River! This sounds like a great option for my son who resists poetry just a little.

Thank you for helping to bring a spoonful of reading fun to the Poppins Book Nook this month!
