The earliest reference to this well-known rhyme is in the Namby Pamby, a ballad by Henry Carey which was published in 1725. It read:

Now he sings of Jackey Horner
Sitting in the Chimney-Corner
Eating of a Christmas pie,
Putting in his tube, Oh Fie!
Putting in, Oh Fie! his Thumb
Pulling out, Oh Strange! a Plum.

In the nineteenth century, a story began to gain currency that this rhyme is actually about a man named Thomas Horner. Horner was a steward to Richard Whiting, the last abbot of Glastonbury before the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII of England. The story goes, that prior to the abbey’s destruction, Horner was sent to London by the abbot with a huge Christmas pie. Hidden in this Christmas pie was the deeds to a dozen manors, which was a gift to the King to try and convince him not to nationalise Church lands. Apparently during the journey, Horner opened the pie and took the deeds of the manor of Mells in Somerset, keeping them to himself. Records to indicate that Thomas Horner did become the owner of the manor, paying of the title, but his descendants have said that the legend is untrue and that the deed was purchased.
