One of the theories surrounding the origins of this nursery rhyme was that it was actually inspired by an actual story. A young Mary Sawyer (later Mary Tyler) had a pet lamb that, at the suggestion of her brother, she decided to take to school one day. Visiting the school that day was a young man by the name of John Roulstone. He was very pleased with the presence of the lamb, that he returned the next day with a piece of paper with three stanzas of the poem written on it.
The school mentioned in Mary Had a Little Lamb is thought to be The Redstone School which was built in 1798 and is now located in Sudbury, Massachusetts. Here also stands a statue of Mary’s lam.
