This week we have been learning about the respiratory system and the lungs. If you missed the other parts of our Human Body Study, you can see them here: Human Body – Doctor’s Bag, Human Body ~ Body Parts, Human Body: Bones, Joints and Muscles, Senses, Cells, Heart, Blood and Circulation, Digestive System and Nutrition, the Brain and Nervous System, the Skin, Hair and Nails, the Immune System and Germs, the Respiratory System, the Excretory System, Reproduction System and Dental.

Make this fun Bottle Lung while learning about the respiratory system.

We made this  Soft Drink Bottle Lung, which was a great way to show the boys how the lungs work. I have seen ones with two balloons in them (one for each lung), but we chose to just do the one balloon (lung).

First, cut the bottom off a 1.25L soft drink bottle. Then make a hole in the lid, big enough to put a straw through. Then attach a balloon to the end of a straw with a rubber band. Push the straw through the line via the bottom of the bottle. The straw may need to be cut a little if it is too long. Cut the neck off another balloon and attach it, using a rubber band, to the bottom of the soft drink bottle.

When the soft drink bottle lung it sitting still, there is no air in the lung (the purple balloon) but, when you gently pull down on the balloon at the bottom of the soft drink bottle (the yellow one in our picture), the lung fills up with air. How amazing is that?

We also used this foam puzzle to help with our learning about the parts of the lung.
