CTC Math is a complete online math program that has proven to raise students maths grades, lesson by lesson. The step-by-step lessons are presented by world-renowned Australian math teacher, Pat Murray who has helped thousands of students around the world. Not only are the lessons short, easy to understand, and concise, they also help students to learn at their own pace which helps them increase in confidence.
We were asked to review the 12 Month Family Plan. When signing up for this plan you are able to access lessons for Kindergarten through to Grade 6, basic math, pre-algebra, elementary measurement and geometry, algebra I and II, pre-calculus, calculus, trigonometry and geometry.
At the start of each topic, the student is able to complete a diagnostic standard or comprehensive test. This will enable you to see what level your child is at.
Then, at the start of each lesson is a short video lesson where the new concepts are explained and examples are given. This is then followed by online questions on the material that has just been covered. After completing the questions, you are given your results. The correct answers receive a green tick and the wrong answers have a red cross and the correct answer written next to them. The students are then able to print off their results if they wish. If they were unable to master all the concepts in the lesson, they are able to repeat it.
Under the questions for each lesson, there is a lesson summary where you are able to print off a page to help you.
How did we go?
With our family membership, we were able to have both of our boys use this online math program, though you are able to have up to 5 students on the one account.
When first signing in, the boys chose their grade level (R – grade 4 and B – grade 2) and then the first stream. They both completed the diagnostic test for the first topic. This was great to see how they were going. Then they chose to complete the topics that they were currently completing in Math.
We liked:
- The format and length of the videos. The boys were a bit worried they would have to watch a long, boring video before answering the questions, but these ones were short and explained the new content extremely well.
- The weekly emails that were sent out. This enable me to see how each of the boys were going and if they were struggling with anything
- The layout of the website is easy to navigate around. The boys were able to complete their work on their own.
- The boys were able to choose their own grade levels. If the boys wanted to go back a grade and revise material that they were having trouble with, they were able to and also if they wanted to go ahead and learn new math concepts, they were also able to.
Though a little skeptical at first, both boys have really enjoyed using this program and we have found that it has really helped with their other Math work.
