A life in Balance: Discovery of a Learning Breakthrough
For this review, we were asked to read A Life in Balance from the Learning Breakthrough Program. A Life in Balance is written by Eric Belgau as told to him by his father, Frank Belgau. The Learning Breakthrough Program is an alternative treatment for those who suffer from dyslexia, ADHD and other learning disabilities.
This story is truly inspirational showing what someone with passion and dedication can do to change the lives of those who are disadvantaged. Frank Belgau dedicated over 30 years researching, learning through trial and error, and finally establishing a program that has changed the lives of thousands of children who have suffered from learning disabilities, attention disorders and other problems that interfere with learning.
Frank spent 10 years in the Air Force before he became a teacher. After a short spell in a normal classroom he was asked to teach students who had been labeled as educable mentally retarded students. He was inspired by many of these so called “unteachable” children, as despite their limitations, they were extremely willing to learn.
This book is the story of the amazing journey that Frank undertook as he gradually put together his powerful brain-training program. Along the way he met many inspirational people who also, like him, were prepared to look outside the normal ways of teaching to help those who had difficulty learning.
Through research and trial and error in the classroom, Frank discovered that certain exercises helped the brain to process information more clearly. The skills of children who were having trouble reading, writing and communicating started being enhanced.
The program that he developed is called the Learning Breakthrough Program. This program uses a balance board, pendulum, bean bags and other items (these are listed on the Learning Breakthrough Website) to train a child’s brain which helps to make learning easier. These activities involve the interaction of both sides of the body and includes multisensory interaction. It shows exercises that can be undertaken using the above tools.
At the end of the book, they have included some activities that can be completed without any investment. These activities, which include walking, hopping and skipping, will still have a positive impact on your child.
I have really enjoyed reading this book and seeing how Frank never backed down from a challenge, never gave up. I would definitely recommend this book to every parent. Whether you have a child who is struggling with learning and has a disability or your child is doing well, this book is beneficial to everyone.
