10 Activities for Learning about Canada

We have been learning about Canada for the past few weeks. Here are 10 activities we used for learning about Canada!

1. Canadian Handprint Flag

The boys completed this flag in their A3 visual art diaries that they use for Art. We drew around one of their hands on red paper and then cut it out and glued it in the middle of the page. They then glued on red crepe paper for the rest of the flag.

2. Pancakes with Maple Syrup

Almost 80% of the world’s maple syrup comes from Canada. We made some pancakes to have with our Canadian Maple Syrup.

3. Jelly Cheesecake Slice

We made a jelly cheesecake slice that uses the red and white colours of Canada. You can find the recipe here: Jelly Cheesecake Slice

4. Snow Globe

To make a snow globe you need:

glass jar

water resistant glue

small plastic figures/animals

water

glitter

Glue the plastic figures/animals to the inside lid of the jar. Once the glue has dried, fill the jar with water and add 1 teaspoon of glitter. Glue the lid onto the jar and shake.

5. Maple Syrup Playdough – Canada Flag

To make maple syrup play dough you need:

2 cups plain flour

2 TBSP maple syrup

1 cup salt

4 TBSP Cream of Tartar

2 cups boiling water

2 TBSP oil

food colouring

Add all ingredients, except for food colouring, into the bowl of a thermo and mix on SP6 for about 10 secs until everything is just combined.

Knead on SP1 for 1-2 mins until you get the texture that you like. If it is too wet, add more flour, if it is too dry, add more water.

NOTE: If you are making all the play dough one colour, you can add it to the water and add with the other ingredients. If you wish to make this play dough into four different colours, separate the dough when it is finished and knead in the food colouring by hand.

7. Teepees

To make our teepees, I just made a cone out of brown card and stapled/taped it together. Then the boys decorated the teepees. We taped straws on the inside of the teepees (usually wooden poles to hold them up) and then made the door.
