These last couple of weeks we have been reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We watched the original version of the movie, while enjoying some of the Willy Wonka chocolate and candy.

After we read the book, we enjoyed some Wonka chocolate and candy while we watched the original movie.

We talked about all the different flavours of the candy and how different they were from other candy that we have had in the past.

Then we wrote a list of the main characters in the book and using acrylic paint, we painted their features onto wooden peg dolls.  We used a piece of foam to make Willy Wonka’s hat.

After cutting out a variety of different shapes on coloured paper, the boys created their own candy machine, adding lights and whatever else they wanted.

Next, we talked about the Golden Tickets and how lucky the five children were to find one. There must have been thousands of chocolate bars sold during the time, so finding one would be very difficult.

They also designed their own candy bars and wrote a short story about them.

In the book, the children go on a boat ride on the chocolate river during the tour of the chocolate factory. The boys designed and painted their own boats out of salt dough.

All while we were completing these activities, we talked about the differences between the book and the movie and what they liked and what they didn’t.

We talked about the behaviour / character traits of each of the five children who won the golden tickets and which were good traits and which were bad.

We also completed some worksheets that go very well with this book. There are two packs available. One for the Tots to Preps and the other is for kids in Grades 1 through 3. Click the link below each of the pictures to find out more about each of the packs.
