Sleeping Gumnut Babies

While visiting my parents, we picked up some gum nuts that had fallen off the tree, deciding that when we arrived home, we would use them for a craft.

As our gumnuts had been picked up from the ground, they were a little dirty, so we had to clean them up a bit before we started.

To make these gumnut babies, you will need:

  • gumnuts
  • yellow felt
  • green felt
  • wooden balls or beads – ours had a ours had a diameter of 2.5cm
  • hot glue gun

First, using the hot glue gun to glue the wooden bead onto the top of the gumnut.

Cut out a circle from the green felt. My circle had a diameter of around 2.5cm. Cut out a small triangle out of the felt and then hold the two points of the cut out piece together (see small picture in the top right hand corner) and add glue to the inside of the felt. Push this over the top of the wooden bead. This becomes the hat. You may need to use a little more glue to glue the hat on.

Cut out a long strip, about 10cm long and 0.5cm wide. Add a strip of glue around the bottom of the bead where it meets the gumnut. Wrap the yellow strip around crossing it over at the front. Make sure it is glued down properly.

Finally, it is time to draw on the face. Using a blue marker, draw on the eyes and then using a red marker, draw on the mouth.

It is really hard to find any gumnuts near us, regardless of size. I was so happy when we were talking around my parents property and found these big ones.
