If you are looking for an introductory science curriculum for kids ages 6-11, then look no further than Introductory Science by Science Shepherd.
We received the Level B workbook and Answer Key for our boys to complete. The Level B workbook is a massive, softcover, spiral book with 383 pages. I love the spiral, as it allows it to lay completely flat which is easier for children to write in. The Answer Key is a lot thinner and is black and white with just 43 pages.
The prices are as follows:
- Introductory Science Video Course – $35
- Workbook Level A – $12
- Answer Key for Level A Workbook – $3
- Workbook Level B – $15
- Answer Key for Level B Workbook – $3
Created by a homeschool dad, this introductory science curriculum covers many topics such as creation, geology, biology, astronomy, oceanography, and meteorology. This curriculum is written from a Christian perspective, with references to God and creation throughout.
The video course gives you 12-months access to daily video lessons which run anywhere from 2-5 minutes per lesson. As the course is divided into 35 weeks of lessons, these short videos can easily fit into your homeschool routine.
Along with the video course, you can purchase workbooks and answer keys. These workbooks are great for reinforcing the concepts learnt during the video lessons. The Level A workbook is aimed for kids ages 6-8, while the Level B workbooks for ages 9-11. Level B contains the same information as Level A, plus a little additional content.
This curriculum contains 5 videos per week for 35 weeks with each video lastly just under 3 minutes. Also included below the videos are the Creative Commons Licensing Information, which is extremely helpful.
How did we go?
After logging in, our boys watched all the videos for week one in one sitting. Then they completed all the activities in the workbook for week 1. We only had one book which B used, so R wrote all his answers in a notebook, but this worked well for us. As I said before, we choose Level B as it had all of the same information as Level A as well as few more fun activities.
Since the videos are only short, we completed each days work in one day. On day 1, they watched the videos and answered the questions in the workbook. A couple of days later, they watched the videos again before moving onto the next week’s work. This was to help the remember and understand what they were learning. For younger children, it will probably be better if they watch the short video and complete the questions in the workbook each day as it is recommended.
There are also hands-on activities that our boys enjoyed as well, like in Week 2, there was a Creation Picture Activity, where your child creates six pictures of what happened on each day of the Creation week. As you can see in the picture above, this is week 5. After watching the Week 5, Day 1 video there is a video activity: weather observation. This is a science experiment showing that there is always water in the air.
Overall, we love this Christian Based science curriculum. The videos are short but informative, the activities are great for reinforcing what they have learnt and the activities in the workbook are a great enhancement for the program. This is definitely an affordable program that I would recommend to all.
