Lap of Oz: Day 59 Emma Gorge

Day 59

Day 59

While we are based in Kununurra, we decided to check out Emma Gorge, which is located on the Gibb River Road. The road is all bitumen up until the turn off into Emma Gorge into where it turns to a dirt, corrugated road. It was a slow but short drive into the parking area. It took us about an hour to get to the Gorge from Kununurra, so it wasn’t too big a drive.

The boys were excited to see the Gibb River Road sign.

This was the view we saw when we turned onto the Gibb River Road.

Starting the dirt road to Emma Gorge.

Emma Gorge 19

This was the good part, it got a lot worse after this.

Emma Gorge 20

At the start of the walking track to Emma Gorge, was a sign about different features you would see on your walk. Each feature was numbered, which our boys thought was great. The closer they got to 11, the closer they were getting to have a swim!

Let the countdown begin!

Emma Gorge

The walking track was 1.6km there (and another 1.6km out) and was a very interesting walk. It started off with a narrow dirt track before getting a lot more rocky.

The way forward!

Emma Gorge 6

The scenery was beautiful and constantly changing!

Emma Gorge 7

We found some massive rocks and hid under them to cool down.

Emma Gorge 8

There were some impressive rocks!

Emma Gorge 9

Finally we reached number 11 and the view was absolutely stunning!

Emma Gorge 11

The boys couldn’t wait to get into the water.

Emma Gorge 12

Though it was absolutely freezing!! We were told there was a warm spot just around the corner to the right (behind the rocks on the right hand side of the photo!).

Emma Gorge 13

So we started heading that way.

Stopping for a little shower on the way.

It was so warm in this small area, you didn’t want to leave. But eventually we had to. The hard part was getting back into the freezing cold water to get out.

The walk back to the car didn’t seem to take as long as before, maybe due to all the people traffic coming in, or maybe we walked faster trying to warm up after our rather cool swim. Anyhow, after we got back, we decided to head up to Wyndham.

We saw the rather large crocodile before heading up to the Five Rivers Lookout. This crocodile was built as a reminder to watch out for crocodiles in the surrounding waters.

At the summit of the Bastion Range, 335 metres above sea level is the Five Rivers Lookout. Here you are able to see the mouths of five rivers: the Durack, Kink, Pentecost, Forrest, and Ord River.

After finding all the five mouths of the rivers, we headed off this windy hill to the Zebra Rock Gallery.

Here we saw some amazing decorations made out of this awesome zebra rock. They looked so cool!

We saw a massive boab tree on the way out and decided to stop and have a look.

After such a busy day, we decided to relax and watch the sunset over Kununurra at Kellys Knob Lookout.

On the way home, we dropped into the Celebrity Tree Park, where celebrities have planted trees. We didn’t know many of these celebrities, apart from Kate Cebrano and Grant Denyer, though we didn’t read of the plaques.

Overall we had a very busy and tiring day. We all slept well that night!
