Human Body: Dental

This week, we have been learning about dental care.

If you missed the other parts of our Human Body Study, you can see them here: Human Body – Doctor’s Bag, Human Body ~ Body Parts, Human Body: Bones, Joints and Muscles, Senses, Cells, Heart, Blood and Circulation, Digestive System and Nutrition, the Brain and Nervous System, the Skin, Hair and Nails, the Immune System and Germs, the Respiratory System, the Excretory System, Reproduction System and Dental.

There are many activities that you can do with your child to help them learn about dental care.

First we made a gum out of pink/red play dough and then we added blanched almonds for teeth. The boys took turns at brushing the teeth and then flossing between the teeth, where the toothbrush can’t get to.

Dental Teeth

Then we made this model of a tooth. I got the idea from Step into Second Grade with Mrs Lemons.

We talked about the parts of the tooth (this is a tooth from the top jaw) and how a cavity starts and slowly grows, causing much pain.

Parts of Teeth

We also used this foam puzzle to help with about the oral cavity.

Oral Cavity

And this Teeth model was really handy when talking about the gums and teeth. We had to add all the teeth to the model which the boys enjoyed counting as they went. They also brushed and flossed these teeth as they were more ‘real’ than our blanched almond model above.

Teeth

The boys loved learning about teeth and about how they are at the stage of losing their baby, or ‘milk’ teeth and are growing their permanent teeth. Now they know how they need to care for these new teeth so not to get cavities in them.
