Making your own homemade natural toothpaste might seem strange, though it is a great way to reduce waste while avoiding a lot of unnatural chemicals.
Homemade Natural Toothpaste
Making your own toothpaste is easy to do with only a few ingredients. With healthier ingredients and less plastic packaging, this toothpaste will also end up being cheaper than commercial products as well.
Natural Toothpaste Notes
- I use Extra virgin unrefined coconut oil
- 3 drops of Essential Oils can be added if you desire, though do your research on what oils to use, especially if young children or pregnant/breastfeeding individuals will be using this toothpaste. If adding essential oils, add them to the coconut oil before you add the coconut oil to the mixture.
- Xylitol powder or liquid stevia can be added to the toothpaste to help with the taste, if you wish.
- The activated charcoal is used in this mixture as a whitener. Turmeric could be used instead.
- Use a clean tool every time you take a small amount of toothpaste from the jar as any that is being reused may introduce bacteria to the toothpaste and cause it to spoil.

- 2 TBSP Bicarbonate of Soda
- 4 tsp Activated Charcoal
- ½ Cup Coconut Oil
Making Homemade Natural Toothpaste
In a small bowl, mix together the calcium carbonate powder, bicarbonate of soda and the activated charcoal.

Spoon a small amount of the mixture onto your toothbrush and brush as normal. Rinse with water.
Storing Homemade Natural Toothpaste
As this toothpaste doesn’t contain any preservatives, it should be used within a few weeks to a month, though if stored correctly, it may last longer.
To help it last longer, store in multiple small glass jars and store the unused jars in the fridge until you are ready to use them.
