The magnetic compass originated in China during the Qin dynasty. This magnetic compass interacts with the earth’s magnetic field via a magnet and aligns itself to point to the magnetic poles. It enables users to see which direction is due north and south.
To make this DIY Simple Compass, you will need:
thread about 5-6 inches long
paddle pop stick (popsicle stick)
paper/plastic cup
glue
To make this compass:
Rub the magnet along the needle from the eye to the point until it is magnetised. The needle is magnetised when it sticks to a metal surface.
Tie one end of the thread to the middle of the needle and then lower it into the cup.
Tie the other end of the thread to the middle of the paddle pop stick, making sure that the needle is not touching the bottom of the cup.
You can use the glue to glue the paddle pop stick in place.
No matter which way you turn the cup, the needle will always settle facing north/south.
Our boys really enjoyed finding their way around, by following the needle north. We talked about how it would help people who are lost find their way out and what other ways this compass could be useful.
What are some of the ways this compass would be useful today?
