Review: Supercharged Science

Our boys love science and science experiments, so when Supercharged Science came up, we knew it was a product that we would really love to review. And it definitely didn’t disappoint!

Supercharged Science is an online science learning program which is jam packed full of fun and exciting, self-guided hands-on science experiments that you can complete in your own home. We were given access to the e-Science Premium Membership which is available for Grades K-12 at a cost of $57 per month. They also have a Membership for Grades K-8 available for $37 per month.

The teacher, Aurora Lipper, who is a mechanical engineer, pilot, astronomer, university instructor, scientist and homeschool teacher and mother, has a way of making science come to life in her simple and easy to follow videos and step by step instructions.

Each topic has a couple of lessons in them (as you can see in the photo above), which can take a few weeks to complete. In each lesson there is some reading, many experiments and student worksheets and exercises for you to complete. Therefore each topic could take you a few weeks to a month to complete. There is so much information for you to enjoy and learn! Each topic also contains a  shopping list which allows to you plan ahead and purchase products that you may not have available in your home.

If you would like to use this curriculum alongside an other science curriculum, you can use the conversion charts that have been provided by Aurora Lipper and her team.

How we do go?

When we first logged in, I was a little overwhelmed, so the first thing we did was view the Getting Started video. This was an excellent video showing you how to navigate around  the site.  We also found the User Guide on how to use the website at the top right hand corner on the Science Learning Space site.

Supercharged Science

You can chose which science area you would like to start with, by either topic or by grade level. We chose to start by topics, starting with Unit 1: Mechanics.

SS Detecting the Electric Field

We learnt about gravitation force and completed some fun experiments about detecting the gravitational field, the magnetic field and the electric field. The boys had an awesome time moving a ruler with a balloon (above) and playing with their cereal while learning about force (below).

SS Force Full Cereal

After finishing the first three units (mechanics, motion and matter) the boys were asking if there was any information about the human body and how it works as they have recently become interested in this. We found the second unit of Biology (Unit 19) was full of fun and exciting material relating to the human body and skipped straight to that.

robotic hand 4

The boys really enjoyed making a robotic hand and loved showing it to all our visitors. They were so proud of themselves for helping make it.

In each topic we chose to do, we started with the reading before moving onto the fun experiments. Sometimes we completed all of the experiments and sometimes we only completed some. This all depended on the supplies we could get for each experiment. After the experiments, we completed the exercises for the lesson.

To watch the videos in the curriculum, you will need high speed internet. We have very fast internet and had no problems at all watching them. We really enjoyed watching the videos as they helped show us how to complete the experiments properly. My oldest boy would watch them and completed them almost on his own! We loved that for the experiments that we didn’t quite have all the needed supplies, we were still able to watch them being completed.

We have had an absolute ball using this amazing online homeschool science curriculum and will definitely continue to use it. Not only are the boys having fun and making lots of things, but they are learning so much!  I would definitely recommend this program! We loved it and so will you!
