Lap of Oz: Day 46 Edith Falls

Day 46

Day 46

The previous day, we did take a quick trip into Edith Falls, just to see if there was any space available for our caravan and were told that there wasn’t, so we headed back to the free camp for the night. Late that afternoon, we were joined by many other caravans/camper trailers and tents, as they were most likely told the same thing.

We were told if we wanted to stay there, to arrive at 8am and stand in line and we are guessing that others were told the same thing. We decided to get up early to make the most of the day and get in lots of swimming (and to get a park that would fit a caravan in) and then head back to a free camp that night to save money. Image our surprise when an older man in his motorhome towing a car, saw us packing up our caravan at 7am, suddenly jumped in his seat and drove off into Edith Falls. He obviously thought we were getting in early and get in line, not sure what he thought when he saw us head off in the direction of the upper pools instead of the accommodation line.

Leliyn (Edith Falls) is located in the Nitmiluk National Park, north of Katherine, are made up of a number of falls and rock pools. We headed straight up to the Upper Pools which was around a 1km walk.

Again we followed these fabulous little triangle markers. Our boys really love seeing these now for some reason and have now turned it into a little game; counting how many we see on our walks.

On the way, there was a little walk off to a lookout, though you couldn’t see much due to the tall trees that were in the way.

We were very surprised, having this whole place to ourselves for about an hour before others starting arriving!

The pools were quite deep in places, the water was cold and many of the rocks were covered in slippery moss, so we had to be careful where we put our feet.

We finally got our underwater camera working again. Though it was a cheap camera, it does take some pretty good photos.

After a lot of work, we finally got the boys close to the waterfall, and then were unable to get all of us in a photo.

After spending nearly three hours here, we decided it was time to head down and check out the lower pool. We didn’t find this as impressive and it was quite deep for the boys, as well as a lot colder!

Grass!!! We haven’t seen green grass like this for over a month, so we had to take some time to sit down and have a little snack on a piece of green grass. It was absolutely amazing!

After a big day of swimming, we headed to a free camp: Bridge Creek Rest Area for the night.
