Day 127
Today we took a drive to the Otway Tree Top to see about the walk. It was absolutely freezing and the walk was going to cost us $70 which we thought was way too much, so the boys had a game of chess and a quick play on the playground before we left.
Next we took a drive to Triplet Falls. We were going to do the 2 km walk, but the path was extremely wet and very muddy, so we decided not to do it either. We then drove through the Beech Forest, Tanybryn and Skenes Creek, stopping at Apollo Bay for lunch.
This part of the Great Ocean Road is no where near the ocean. Instead it is through lots of forests with steep, windy roads. We had to travel this road the next day with the van, so we were thinking of what we could do to lighten the van to help the car make it up the hills. Note: We ended up emptying all the water and putting the fuel from the jerry’s into the car. Our car didn’t struggle at all which was great.
Next we went to the Cape Otway Lighthouse. On the way we saw many koalas resting in the trees. It was hard to stop and take photos as there was no where to pull off the road, but we managed to get a couple.
We weren’t sure what to expect here as we had heard lots of bad reports about it. The entry price (for a family of 4) was $49.50 which a lot of people didn’t want to pay, so they didn’t go in. We read a couple of reports about how kids had loved it, so we decided we would give it a go. We are so glad we did. The boys LOVED it. On paying, the boys were given a booklet of activities and information about the attractions here and a map of the place. They really enjoyed reading about the places we saw and walked through as well as leading us around using their maps. I would really recommend this for families.
The boys loved listening to the morse code in the Telegraph Station.
The flagstaff was huge!
The Head Lightkeepers Residence was quite big.
The lighthouse standing tall by the ocean.
The windy steps up the lighthouse.
The view from the top was spectacular!
Climbing back down was a bit scary!
The RAAF Radar Station was interesting.
The Aboriginal Culture Centre was also fun!
B painted his own shell.
Then both boys (and hubby) had a go at throwing a spear the way the Aboriginals do it.
Next we headed back to Princetown, stopping at a couple of lookouts,
One side of the road was the beach/ocean and the other side way green hill side!
Amazing!
and Johanna Beach on the way home.
