Today I will be reviewing the online version of the The Old Schoolhouse Magazine or TOS Magazine.

This magazine can be found on The Old Schoolhouse Magazine website (under the Magazine heading, click on current issue) or click here to go to the November / December issue. If you are homeschooling or a mother, this magazine is for you! With awesome articles and loads of ideas to help you in your journey, it is a must. You definitely need to read it.

Topics that are covered in these magazines range from homeschooling styles and curriculums, technology in homeschooling, parenting, resources and much more!

Some of the articles in this issue that I really enjoyed are:

The article by Shelia Campbell (His Joyful Homeschooler) – Learning to Love Silence and Solitude was fantastic. Our boys are growing up in the age of technology and they do spend way too much time in front of screens whether it be the tv, the computer, or the iPad.  We have recently sat down with our boys and explained to them that is really is not good for them and we have put a time limit of 1 hour “screen time” on school days and 2 hours (if we are home) on weekends but they have to break them up – one hour in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Mary Hood’s (The Ordinary Homeschooler) article on using the library to create your own curriculum was fantastic. We try our best to include the boys in most things, especially when it comes to their education. We visit the library every 2nd Monday (and a few days in-between) and always come out with bags of books. Only I had a card and we were getting to the stage where we had to put books back as you are only allowed 20 books per card.

Now the boys have a card each. Before we go, they choose a topic that they are interested in, we find some books/dvds on that topic and they borrow them on their own card. We now fill two bags full of books. We also put books on hold online and receive a text message from the library when they are ready to be picked up. This is great for when they finish a topic and want to start a new one or when someone else has already borrowed the books we want.

The ‘Can we teach Godlly Character’ article by Jessica Hulcy (The Unit Study Homeschooler) is an amazing helpful article. This is one of the things that we would love our boys to learn. It is full of amazing help and advice which we will be start to use in our house.

Rhea Perry’s (Work from Home) article on Learning to Manage a Business by Managing a Kitchen is a fantastic read. It is full of awesome tips that are going to be very helpful for us. I too believe it is good for boys to learn how to cook and am always trying to involve our boys in kitchen activities. The area of planning is something that I have always tried to run from, but with Rhea’s encouraging words, I am excited to try again and hopefully will achieve great results.

These are just a few of the incredible and fascinating articles that you can find in this wonderful magazine. It truly is a marvellous magazine which will encourage and enhance your homeschooling journey. It certainly has helped us!
