Day 65

Day 65

Today we headed towards Derby.

About 7k out of town, is the famous ‘Prison Boab Tree‘ and Myalls Bore and Cattle Trough.

As you first take the turnoff, you will see the Myalls Bore and Cattle Trough to your left. This long cattle trough apparently could handle up to 500 bullocks at one time. It is currently around 120 metres long. Water is now pumped into this trough by a windmill.

Then we walked to the Prison Boab Tree, seeing this birds nest in another boab on the way.

Apparently this boab tree was used for storage supplies during World War II and Aboriginal prisoners in the past as well.

Though apparently there is no proof that the prisoners were kept inside. They may have been chained to the outside, but again no proof.

After seeing this huge tree, we headed to Mike ‘n’ Ath’s Savannah Retreat for the night. To get here, we had to drive a few km’s up this end of the Gibb River Road.

At around 5pm, all the people who were staying there, got together for a short happy hour, before a communal dinner. After dinner, we sat around a campfire and talked, while some laser lights going in the background.

The boys loved dancing in the lights.

This place is relatively new to the Wikicamps app. We are so glad we found it. We all enjoyed a great evening here. The boys loved the dog!
