Peppermint essential oil is the most common of all the mint oils. Its scent is strong, cool and minty fresh. Peppermint is highly versatile; it’s most often used in the home but can be applied topically when diluted. When using peppermint it’s important to remember that a little goes a long way. This stuff is potent! Here are 5 Excellent Benefits of Using Peppermint Essential Oil.
5 Benefits of Using Peppermint Essential Oil
Cold & Allergy Symptom Relief
Peppermint essential oil is thought to shorten the duration of a cold and provides relief from cold symptoms. Because peppermint contains menthol it is considered a natural decongestant and fever-reducer. (Menthol is what is used in most topical over-the-counter rubs and cough drops). Peppermint essential oil can soothe sore throats, help both sinus and chest congestion, and quiet a persistent cough. I recommend using Peppermint essential oil in a diffuser for cold relief:
Cold Relief Diffuser Blend
- 2 drops Peppermint EO
- 3 drops Oregano EO
- 1 drops Lemon EO
- 1 drop Melaleuca (Tea Tree) EO
This Homemade Vapour Rub can be applied, in small amounts, to the chest and feet as needed.
Emotional Support:
Peppermint essential oil is uplifting in nature and can improve depressive symptoms. It helps with mental fatigue, fights exhaustion and is highly effective at reducing stress. Peppermint essential oil encourages a positive outlook.
Raise Energy Levels
Peppermint oil increases energy, boosts mood and performance, and increases focus and concentration. When diffused peppermint essential oil enhances mental and physical energy.
Pep Diffuser Blend
- 2 drops Peppermint EO
- 1 drop Lemon EO
- 1 drops Wintergreen EO
- 1 drop Tangerine EO
Peppermint Essential Oil 10 mL
Peppermint Organic Hydrosol 4 oz
Natural Antibacterial
Peppermint essential oil has both anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. It’s often used to kill bacteria and allergens in the home. The antibacterial action of peppermint essential oil makes it an excellent choice for cleaning, especially when used on countertops and in the bathroom.
Antibacterial Cleaning Spray, All-Purpose
- in a glass spray bottle combine:
- ½ cup white vinegar
- 2 TBSP bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
- 6 drops Lemon EO
- 3 drops Peppermint EO
- 3 drops Lemongrass EO
- 1 drop Melaleuca EO
Fill rest of the bottle with water and shake well. Spray surfaces and wipe clean.
Bug Repellant
The strong scent of peppermint essential oil works as a deterrent for a variety of pests and insects. Peppermint is often used throughout the home and garden as a natural alternative to the harsh chemicals in over-the-counter products. These OTC products can be especially dangerous for children and pets. Peppermint essential oil is a much safer alternative and can be your first line of defense.
Household Insecticide
- Combine the following in a spray bottle
- 8 oz distilled water or rubbing alcohol
- 6 drops Peppermint EO
- 4 drops Orange EO
Shake well and spray around doors, windows, baseboards or use on a cotton ball and leave in areas insects enter the home.
Garden Spray
- In a 16oz spray bottle combine
- 6 drops Peppermint EO
- 5 drops Rosemary EO
- 5 drops Clove EO
- 3 rops Thyme EO
Shake well and spray generously in areas you want to get rid of pests. If spraying directly on plants use 3 drops of Peppermint essential oil only to 1 gallon of water.
Because of peppermint’s potency some people may experience sensitivity; I highly recommend using sparingly until you know how your body will react. Also, make sure to do your research before using essential oils around pets and children.
