Vertebrates and Invertebrates Sorting Mats

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my full disclosure policy.

These Vertebrates and Invertebrates sorting mats are the perfect way for toddlers, kindergarteners and preschoolers to practice recognizing simple animal classification and sorting at the same time!

Materials Needed
  • white paper
  • printer
  • laminator

To Prepare:

To prepare, print out all the pages on white paper or cardstock. For durability, I then recommend laminating them. There are three different mats; one for both invertebrates and vertebrates and a separate one for each of them as well.

You could write invertebrate or vertebrate on the back of each card before laminating to make this activity a self-check one. For very young children, you could also place velcro dots on the spots on the mats and on the back of the cards.

To Use:

This activity is pretty straightforward. Have your child match the correct animal onto the place on the mat. For young children, start familiarising them with the different animals, one at a time. Read the name of the animal while pointing to it on the mat and explaining about the backbone in the process.

This pack also includes a black and white version for those kids who love to colour in.
