Are you looking for fun, engaging and educational activities to support and reinforce your child’s learning? These Brilliant Boxes, created by The Sunshine Collective, are a great additional to your homeschool resources, boredom busters for school holidays or to take with you when travelling.
Brilliant Boxes offer boxed curriculum aimed at children in pre-school through grade 6. Each box is delivered to your door and contains 14 hands-on activities that directly support specific outcomes in the Australia Primary School Curriculum.
Inside each box, you will receive
- Parent Card and a Parents: How to Use this Box card which contain easy-to-follow instructions for parents
- resources needed to complete the activities
- easy to read activity sheets in order to be completed
- answers, in a sealed envelope
The years 3 to 6 boxes contain 4 activities on a curriculum theme, 5 maths activities and 5 english activities. Most of the items you need will be supplied, except for things like a pencil or glue. The list of items you will need to supply is located on the Parent Card in the box.
For this review, I received the first box for Level 5 which my grade 5 boy used as a supplement to his homeschooling curriculum. I also received the first box for Level 6, which my grade 7 boy used as to review things that he has previously learnt.
Level 5, Box 1
This box covers covers outcomes of the Australian Curriculum in three subjects: Health and Physical Education, English and Maths. For this box, we needed to supply items such as a pencil, scissors, glue, coloured pencils, texts, access to a computer with a word processing software, old magazines.
There were a great range of activities in this box including researching different healthy living options and writing a report or biography, writing a letter or creating a story book, performing a dance routine or workout, designing a fitness program or healthy menu, working on punctuation, as well as problem solving, multiplication, division and code breaking. B loved his water bottle that was included to make sure he was kept hydrated.
Level 6, Box 1
This box covers outcomes of the Australian Curriculum in the same three subjects: Health and Physical Education, English and Maths. For this box, we needed to supply items like coloured pencils, scissors, glue, magazines or junk mail, access to a camera, internet access and lead pencil. There were also a few books that we needed to complete this book, such as Aaron Becker’s book, Journey and Jeannie Baker’s book, Belonging which you could purchase or borrow from the Library.
This box also included a variety of activities including planning a ‘Me’ party, diary entries, creating a collage, ‘niffy numbers’ facts and prime/composite numbers, finishing the sentences and playing a card game using prime numbers which R had a great time playing with his brother and daddy.
Our Thoughts
On opening our boxes, I went through them with my boys and they decided which activities they wanted to do first. Each box is able to be worked through at your child’s own pace, in the order they wish to complete the activities. All the activities are flexible, catering to a variety of learning styles.
We have thoroughly enjoyed our time using these Brilliant Boxes. They are a great educational resource for homeschooling families. I love how all the activities are fun and engaging while supporting different outcomes of the Australian Curriculum. The flexibility is great, with our boys each taking their own time to complete each activity, allowing them opportunities to ask questions or further their learning when they wanted.
Purchasing
Brilliant Boxes can be purchased as a one off box or a six or twelve month subscription. There are also a variety of mini packs that can be purchased for $8-$15. If you would like something more customised, you can order a ‘custom box.’ For each level, there are 10 boxes, two for each school term, plus a mid-year and an end of year holiday revision box.
