The Rainbow Serpent

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my full disclosure policy.

The book we chose for Poppins Book Nook Folktales theme was The Rainbow Serpent. We had a little trouble trying to find a book that fit the Folktale theme, so we first looked up what a folk tale was.

 Folk Tale: noun

a tale or legend originating and traditional among a people or folk, especially one forming part of the oral tradition of the common people.

The Rainbow Serpent is an Australian Aboriginal Dreamtime story originating in the Northern Territory.

We also found many other books in the same series at the library that we also read.

Books for Poppins

Our activities for the month were mainly related to The Rainbow Serpent book.

Dot Paintings

First we did a Dot Painting of a Rainbow Snake inside the map of Australia. You can read more about Aboriginal Art and Dot Painting on the Australian Aboriginal Art website.

We then followed this painting with a couple more dot paintings of Australian Animals.

Ribbon Rainbow Snakes
We made rainbow snakes that ended up a little fluffy due to the wool we used.
To make these, we folded a pipe cleaner in half and tied the wool onto one end.
Then we wrapped the wool around pipe cleaner all the way to the other end before tying off a knot to hold it.
You could also glue on wiggly eggs.

Modelling Clay Rainbow Snake

The boys made a rainbow snake from modelling clay, pushing balls of different coloured clay together before rolling it out.

Modelling Clay Rainbow Snakes and Rainbows

From the modelling clay snake, they went on to make rainbows with the modelling clay. They made a pale snake with a matching rainbow and then a brightly coloured snake and rainbow. You can find some more great activities at Australian Folktales.

I hope you enjoyed seeing our activities for this month and would love to see what you have been up to!

This is so fun and creative! I love the dot paintings. Those are cute. I love having a theme for a month or a week to follow from a favorite book. I am going to need to do that with Little Bee! 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration! 🙂

I love the idea of having a book theme of the week or the month and relating crafts to that book! The dot painting of the Rainbow Snake is beautiful! It looks like it’s museum quality! I hope you framed it!
