Pirate Unit

The Poppins Book Nook theme for July was Pirates. We chose to read the book Treasure Island by Robert Stevenson.

Treasure Island Book

We also borrowed and read many books about pirates.

Pirate Books

Our boys had an awesome time this month, completing pirate activities. We did purchase some pirate accessories that they really enjoyed using as well.

Cannon

This is a cannon that we made from modelling clay. The cannon is supposed to be black, but we didn’t have any black clay, so we made a rainbow cannon.

cutlass

We made this cutlass by cutting 2 of the same shape out of cardboard and gluing aluminium foil on the top of both cutouts. When that was dry, we glued to two parts together and painted the handle.

Hook

This hook was made by cutting the top off a 2L soft drink bottle. The handle was then covered in newspaper to make it more solid and to cover the sharp edges of the plastic bottle. When the glue was dry, the boys painted it black. For the hook, we cut the hook shape out of cardboard and painted it with silver paint. The handle on the hook is around 10 cm long. This way we were able to push the handle through the top of the bottle.

Money Bags

These money bags were made from crepe paper. They weren’t very strong, so didn’t last very long, but the boys still had fun with them.

We purchased the gold pirate coins, and made the silver ones by covering cardboard circles with aluminium foil.

Pirate Hats

We made these pirate hats by cutting the shapes out of cardboard and painting them black. When they were dry, we added the decorations. I used double sided tape to tape elastic to the bottom sides of the hats so the boys could wear them.

Treasure Maps

These treasure maps were made by ripping the edges off a sheet of A4 paper and then brushing them with a wet tea bag. When they were dry, we drew the maps on them.

We found the plastic bottle at a shop and rolled up a map and slide it in ~ a map in a bottle.

Pirate Boy

This is one of our boys dressed up as a pirate . In his left hand he is holding a telescope that we made.

To make the telescope, we cut 3 pieces of dark brown cardboard in 3 different sizes and then curling them up and taping them together.

Eye on Pirate

We also found this (party) game: Stick the Eye Patch on the Pirate. The boys really had a great time with this.

Eye on Pirate

They got quite close on some occasions!

 Treasure Chest

We also made a treasure chest out of a shoebox by taping a curved piece of cardboard to the top of the shoe box before decorating it with black and gold paint. We added some Pirate Treasure Playdough and some pirate coins and jewellery. You can find the recipe for the Pirate Treasure Playdough at One Time Through.

I have also made some FREE Pirate Matching Cards that are great for the little kids.
