As part of our study on butterflies, I created this Butterfly Printable Pack for kids in preschool and kindergarten. We ordered two butterfly chrysalises from The Bug Shop as well as a butterfly house. After 7 days the first butterfly emerged. After a bit of research, it looks like a Leopard Lacewing Butterfly. Here is a link which contains some great images and videos on these butterflies.
After a few days of watching our chrysalises, one of them started to hatch.
It was a lovely sight, watching a beautiful butterfly emerging for it’s chrysalis.
It took the butterfly around 5 hours (from when we first saw it starting to emerges) of hanging onto its chrysalis, getting ready to fly. Little drops of blood dropped off onto the bottom of the cage.
Then it started walking around the cage, slowly flapping its wings. We got out our old video camera and the boys took turns at recording the butterfly. When we purchased the kit, it came with instructions. It said that you can’t keep the butterfly too long as it needs food, so when it had been walking and flying around for a while, we decided it was time to let it go.
We took the cage outside and took the lid off. At first he didn’t want to leave, but finally, he flew out of the cage. When he did, he took off so fast I couldn’t get any photos. We had a tall 6 foot high colourbond fence that he quickly flew over.
The second chrysalis is still hanging there. It did not open. I contacted the place we purchased them from and they said it was dead, so they are sending a replacement.
While we were waiting for the butterfly to emerge, we completed this Butterfly Printable Pack. It is aimed at kids in preschool and kindergarten.
