The Mouse and the Motorcycle

The theme for the Poppins Book Nook this month was Planes, Trains and Automobiles. We chose to read a book about a motorcycle that our boys really love.

The Mouse and the Motorcycle By Beverly Cleary

The Mouse and the Motorcycle Book

After reading the book, we completed a couple of mouse activities to go with this book.

The first one was a finger puppet mouse.

 Finger Puppet Mouse

Using a semi-circle of pink paper, we rolled it up to make a cone shape before taping the end in place.

Then we drew on the eyes with a black marker before using a pipe cleaner, we pushed one end through the mouse and out of its nose. We taped the other end of the pipe cleaner in place.

For the eyes we folded a rectangle piece of pink paper in half and then cut out the ear shape as in the picture below.

Then we unfolded it and glued it in place.

The second activity we completed was a mouse using a small plastic egg.Egg mouse

For this we pushed a pipe cleaner through the hole in the bottom of the egg. Then we bent the pipe cleaner so that it would stay in place. We drew on the faces with a black marker and then we did the ears.

We started the ears the same as above. Then we opened the ears up and glued them down horizontally as in the picture below.

Then we tried a couple of motorcycle activities.

For the first one, the boys rolled small die cast motorcycles through paint and then onto a long sheet of paper. This paper can then be used as wrapping paper or your could frame it.

The boys used one motorcycle per colour, as they didn’t want to mix the colours.

The end result looked great!!

So great, we decided to cut an M out from it.

Then we tried to draw Footprint Motorcycles that we saw on Hand Print and Foot Print Art.

The boys have had an awesome time with this book and these activities!

Hope you enjoy the book too!

I have a Mouse and the Motorcycle Unit and a Prep to Tots Pack available in my shops if you are interested.

I love your activities! The little mice are so cute and the motorcycle art made a beautiful pattern! But I’m a little bias because I love this book anyway! 🙂

I loved this book as a kid & can’t wait for my son to get a little older so we can read it! He has already seen parts of the movie so I think he will like it! These crafts are so cute too- I would have never thought to put some of these crafts with this book but they work so well to make it memorable!

You’ve just inspired me to pull this book off the shelf and move it to our “to be read soon” stack!

This book has been a favorite for our family for a few years. My son loves motorcycles and my daughter thinks mice are cute, so this is a title they always agree on. We are going to try a few of your activities out next time we read it.

Thank you for helping to bring a spoonful of reading fun to the Poppins Book Nook this month!

I love the footprint motorcycles. We’re going to have to try those! The Mouse and The Motorcycle is going back to the top of my reading list!
