To make the litmus paper, we boiled 1/2 red cabbage for about 15 minutes. Then when that was cool, we strained the juice.
We then soaked strips of paper towel about 2.5cm wide and about 10cm long in the cabbage juice. After 1 minute we put these out on baking paper to dry.
This is the litmus paper. So that was the first project complete.
Then it was onto the second one.
We then tested the litmus paper with different products to see what would happen.
baking soda mixed with water
The boys took turns to use the panadol dropper (from the baby pandol from ages ago, lucky I kept them) to drop a few drops of each of them onto the strips of litmus paper.
They were fascinated as to what happened. Some didn’t change, others went bright pink and one went green.
It was a great experiment and easy to do with the kids. The cabbage juice can stain so you do need to be careful. Also make sure they don’t swallow any of the products either..
