Making homemade soap can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be. At the moment, I am choosing the easy route, using goat’s milk melt and pour soap base. With this base, all you need to do is add a few ingredients, pour into your mould and wait for it to set. My most recent soap that I have made is this gorgeous Lemon Poppyseed Soap.
Not only is it a great soap to use in the shower, but it also makes a great soap for use in the kitchen. The lemon scent helps to remove the aroma of onions and garlic during dinner prepping.
I really love the gentle exfoliation the poppyseed give while you wash with this freshly lemon scented soap. The goat’s milk is very nourishing for my skin as well.
You will need:
10 oz or 285 g Goats Milk Soap Base
1 lemon, zested
1 teaspoon poppyseeds
8-12 drops Lemon essential oil
Microwave safe glass bowl
Spoon
Knife
A soap mold
Soap Colourants – This is optional and I used two drops of yellow, just to give this soap a yellowish tint.
Rubbing alcohol in spray bottle (optional)
I have purchased separate utensils just for soap making, as I didn’t want to use the ones I use for cooking our meals.
Cut up the goat milk soap into small chunks, about 2 cm x 2cm and place in a glass microwavable jug.
Microwave in 20 second increments, stirring well after each 20 seconds. Mine took around a minute to be fully melted. Don’t overheat as it will cause the soap base to start bubbling up.
One all the lumps are melted, add the lemon zest and lemon essential oil.
Mix well.
If you are using the colorants, now is the time to add them.
Then add the poppyseeds and mix well.
Place your soap molds on a flat even surface where they can stay, untouched for the next few hours.
Pour your soap into the mold.
I let my soap sit for around 12 hours, allowing it to harden up before popping it out of the mold.
With a silicon mold, the soap should pop out easily, once set.
To make the top free from bubbles, you can spray with rubbing alcohol.
For those in Australia, I purchase my soap supplies from Aussie Soap Supplies in Western Australia.
I made 3 soaps with this recipe, though it all depends on the size of your moulds. If you wish to make more, you will need to adjust the quantity of the ingredients.
Just a note: If your soap has bubbles form on the top after you pour your soap base into your molds, you can spray the tops of the soap with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) as this will help break them up and give you a smooth surface.
Another note: Citrus oils can cause photosensitivity, so I do not recommend exposing the skin to direct sunlight after topical application of these essential oils. However, essential oils in the soap bars are found in small, appropriate amounts that will not cause any phototoxic harm.
If you would like to print out the recipe, I had created a printable version below:
